    Electric boiler

Hi, I want to just buy an electric wort boiler. Anyone know a good place to buy one? So far I've got prices from £150-£400 depending on where you shop. Looking for it to be -60-70 ltrs -insulated like a mash tun -2 electric elements with thermostat control (preferably digital) -temp gauge...

    steam powered boiler

Hmm actually the tanks are rates to a max of 2.5 bar, so operating at 2 bar I'm not sure you would be able to produce the amount of heat needed to boil 30+ ltrs of wort. As you could maybe only get 110c 115c out of the steam The real worry is just that the amount of heat provided by boiling...

    Soft water treatment

Right, so I've found out that my supply water is pretty much rain with no hardness whatsoever. I am putting this down to the cause most of my brews finishing at 1.020 since I moved here. Here are the stats; 10.51mgCA/l calcium 0.63mgmg/l magnesium 28.80 Hardness as mg/l CaCo3 My plan is to...

    AG finishing gravity 1.020

My local brew store has burton salts which is what you are on about with DLS. Am currently reading up on water treatment so I think I'll return to da star for yeast and get my calcium and magnesium to a minimum level. I suppose the silver lining with my water being the softest is I now...

    AG finishing gravity 1.020

Aye, turns out I have very very soft water! Next to nothing in it, calcium is very low so mash and yeast health must be suffering.

    AG finishing gravity 1.020

so my area on that is white hillocks. meaning I've got softy water and the following:- 10.51mgCA/l calcium 0.63mgmg/l 28.80 Hardness as mg/l CaCo3 what does this mean for brewing in English? what is your minimum readings for the average style?

    AG finishing gravity 1.020

20-23ltr and rehydrated over night then add dme to get it started on the day. The only difference is I've moved house and am wondering if it's the water causing the problems. Up in a village in Aberdeenshire.

    AG finishing gravity 1.020

4 out of the last 5 AG brews I have done finish at 1.018-20. Different styles and ingredients, different mash times and temps, tried 64deg 2 hour mash, 67deg 2 hr mash, 3 x 66deg 90min mashes. The one beer came out at 1.010, the only difference with this beer is it had 100g black malt. All have...

    steam powered boiler

Nah, typically water pressure in a home is 3-6bar so the tank should be engineered to take more than that, same as the copper pipe work. Saying that, if it pops I'll be sure to let you know!

    BrewPi, stc1000 or fermostat

well I've got the stc-1000 and it works great for me for fermenting and lagering/conditioning. very simple gadget.

    steam powered boiler

Im thinking of building a steam powered boiler, just wondered if anyone has any success or failure from this. My idea is to get a 80L hot water tank cut 30L of the top of it (alongwith the immersion heater) and solder it to the bottom. As a result, you have a contained water reservoir with...

Whats the hype with real ale.

A beer that isn't carbonated (naturally or forced) doesn't have much of a head. Canny stand a flat looking pint. Lets face it, after 5 pints of near room temperature beer, my tastebuds are done. 5 pints of cool beer that is more carbonated goes down nicer and is more refreshing. Its how you...
