AG Brewday - "Strong Island Oat Brown Ale" with Pics!

Great write-up Ceejay. I brewed an extract analog of this recipe last night, only without the oats. I'm impressed so far. If turns out well, I'll try it again with the oats. I'm back in the UK for Christmas, so I'll try to taste a commercial version. All the best, Ian

STC-1000 probe: temp variation in liquid

Hello, just finished building a brew fridge. I've been playing around with it, figuring out how well it can hold temperature and what the different settings on the Stc-1000 control. I noticed that when the probe is in air (inside or outside the fridge) the temperature reading is stable to...

    Extract+grain ESB | Cloudiness Experiment 1

Thanks Pittsy, good to read something that fits with with my experience. Regarding the cloudiness experiment, the wort is as cloudy as ever. Lots of small particles floating around. My gut feeling is that it is the hop pellets. I'll post again after fermentation. All the best, Ian

    Extract+grain ESB | Cloudiness Experiment 1

One question I have is whether I should expect to get any hot break from LME and steeped grains (14% by weight)? I see some specks of white coagulated **** around the rim of my stock pot. Is that it? Thanks! Ian

    Extract+grain ESB | Cloudiness Experiment 1

I'm starting to wonder if it's the hops causing the cloudiness. My first few brews were with whole hops, and I never had a problem. Since I've been using pellets and my beers have tended to be cloudy. Tonight I noticed a thick green ring of hop residue around the stock pot. It seems that the...

    Extract+grain ESB | Cloudiness Experiment 1

Hi All, I've done a couple of extract-plus-steeped-grain brews by now, but I tend to make cloudy beer. Following a post or two here, and other reading around, I have a list of suspected causes. They are: (i) no hot break due to a flimsy boil on electric hob, (ii) no cold break due to not...

    Store dry yeast in freezer?

Hello, apologies if this has been covered before, but a quick search didn't turn up the answer .. Should I be keeping my dried yeast sachets in the freezer? Up till now I've been using S-04 from Fermentis and that mentions nothing about the freezer. But I just got a couple of packets of...

    Required temperature for alpha-acid isomerization

Many thanks for the replies (I was away over the weekend so am only getting around to reading them now). Based on your comments, I will continue to just leave the (partially) lid on. I'll worry about DMS off-flavours as and when they turn up! Ian

    Required temperature for alpha-acid isomerization

Hello All, I am currently doing extract+steeped-grain brews, working my way through some of the recipes in John Palmer's book. One issue I have is that my feeble electric hob can struggle to maintain a boil during the hops additions unless I leave the lid on. As yet I haven't noticed the DMS...

    Porter

Hi Coxy, there is a (19l) recipe for porter from Palmer's book about halfway down here: http://www.howtobrew.com/section4/chapter19-3.html. Just cut all ingredients in half. I can't say from first-hand it's "proven" .. I plan to try out the extract+steeped-grain version tomorrow (or something...
