On one of my hollidays I had a long descent along a false flat road in Galloway Forrest Park. Just freewheeling down on my recumbent trike, I got up to a speed of just under 45 miles. The only reason I didn't go faster was that I had to slow down for a cattle grid. (Those can ruin your wheels and trip).
Easily done. I overtook a double decker bus and an old couple in a car when I was in my teens. O'brian clubman 10 with suicide gear shifters. I had a dutch IJK or IJM speedo on my bike and the needle was past 45. My bro-in law did 52 down an even steeper hill. When you're young things seem much slower, nowadays I'm much more aware of my mortality. well not so worried about that rather than a sudden stop at that speed is going to hurt like hell once the adrenaline wears off.

I had an accident on a bike going a bit fast...hit the kerb,V dent in the wheel, bent the forks under the frame, over the handlebars and through a fence! Not a mark on me!

WOW! - I found it. I just loved the colour coding the needle as I see it was touching the '0' of 300 so not past 45.
44 mph?

I sold the bike it was on when I passed my driving test. now i'd rather cycle than drive, strange how things have come full circle.

Beach racing, hill climb, drag strip, speedway and circuit racing at Teretonga (NZ's oldest motor racing venue and the southernmost FIA-recognised race track in the world). Sadly no street circuit this year...
