Check as in holding up your brewed pint to a chart or just a reference for possible recipes you're concocting and general style checking?

Brew software will give you colour for style and colour for what you're using.

My laptop screen's version of colours is nothing like reality. And I want it the other way round, I want to hold the beer up to a chart and read off what SRM it is.

I've printed off the chart from DMTaylor. The difference between the on screen and printed is significant (see below), I'm going to assume the printer is more accurate and have a go with it.

I think you will struggle with that even if you get a printed sheet from the BJCP as they will never translate true.
I quote when my wife gets colour charts for paint buys the colour opens the tin and it sometimes is more than 2 shades out.
It will depend on the printing of the chart obviously on how accurate it will be as already shown computer screens are never accurate and I am sure that's what they will be printed from.
A great idea if somebody can get it right though.

And you going to be entering your beers into competitions?

I might at some point.

But this is more that I made a promise to myself that when I brew to a style I would check it against that style rather than only whether it tasted OK. And the the colour is part of that.

Its also about my Staropramen obsession. I reckon blindfold you couldn't tell the difference between mine and what I enjoy down the pub (from the pump). But as soon as you looked at them you'd see how pale mine was compared to the real thing. Looking at the printed version of the chart I'd say it was around 7. I know I'm going to get strange looks when I whip out the chart next time I'm there :laugh8:
