1939 Vauxhall 12, it had a modesty blind on the back window and the two front quarter lights opened and closed via a miniature window winder handle. Rear seat was a full width bench seat, 1442 cc. Reg No FP 3442.

The Mrs had a little generic hatchback when we first met. A sunbeam I think. But first car I actually had after passing my driving test was a Peugeot 305 van bought new and ran til it was scrap. That was in the early 80s.
In metallic green with a black vinyl roof. You could open the car door with a knife.

My cousin's first car was a Viva he customised, got some bits off a Viva GT in the scrapyard (inc bonnet with scoops), fitted sidepipes, jacked it up with Range Rover springs and painted it gold underneath. Was a bit of a beast but came to an untimely end: it was jacked up so much that when he did an emergency stop, physics took over and compressed the half-shaft so much that it broke and rolled out from underneath the car, much to the hilarity of everyone looking on

superb miss hearing stories like that no one does crazy things like that to modern cars sadly

My Viva used to get its clutch plates stuck together when it was left for a few weeks in cold/wet weather. With the rear wheels jacked up, you could start it, then rev hard followed by a simultaneous stamp on clutch and brake. Usually freed up the clutch. Also the gear stick used to come loose of the rod connecting it to the gearbox. I improvised with a couple of nuts to keep it in place but I needed to keep a spanner to hand so I could tighten up every now and again without leaving the drivers seat.
