My Wilko Hoppy Copper Bitter experiment.

I've been brewing for the past 18 months after a break of 30 years! The first 4 or 5 kits I followed the kit instructions and, to be honest, I quickly realised that I will always get something pretty grim (homebrew twang etc) doing it that way. The last 4 or 5 have been better and better as I've...

My Wilko Hoppy Copper Bitter experiment.

Was that with 2 x tins or 1?

My Wilko Hoppy Copper Bitter experiment.

Hi All, I'm thinking of getting one of these on as the Wilko Copper Biiter is on offer at £8 again. Will use two cans and was thinking about adding one or two x 454g jars of honey, and/or medium spray malt, with a Safbrew Abbaye yeast and teabag hop with cascade pellets or something. Would...

    Hops for Irish Stout

Well I got the brew on yesterday and went for Northern Brewer which I'll add after 25 days for 10 days. The brew consists of a 2.1Kg bag of Better Brew Irish Stout extract, 500g Extra Dark spray malt, 500g Light Hopped spray malt, 454g tin of Lyle's black treacle and 10g sachet Mangrove Jacks...

    Hops for Irish Stout

Yes, maybe drop the treacle to one tin. Not used it before. Thinking about 100g Northern Brewer pellets in a muslin bag. I generally add after 25 days and leave for 10 days so 5 weeks in primary.

    Hops for Irish Stout

Hi All, I recently brewed an Irish Stout (Better Brew 2.1kg bag of extract, Safbrew Abbaye yeast, 1kg brewing sugar and 300g dark candi crystals) which turned out very well. I dry hopped with 100g Willamette. Going to repeat the brew but instead of brewing sugar, thinking of using 500g extra...

Better Brew Northern Brown Ale tinkering suggestions

Thanks as always, I just bought a Wherry on Wilko's website for £15 all incl (saw it on another thread), so will read up on some tweaks for that as well now! :drink:

    Getting more from the kit

Just bought one of these - thanks for posting as I would have missed it otherwise! Been intending to try the Wherry for ages and now for £15 (I'm sure it was £23-24 in Wilkos earlier this year) with free delivery to my local store and they take Paypal with no surcharge, it's happy...

Sneak it into the loft when she's out shopping, turn the heating on and hope there are no blow-outs:pray:

Better Brew Northern Brown Ale tinkering suggestions

Thanks Clibit, appreciate the hop suggestions. I'm thinking a kilo of DME (why light in particular?) and maybe some dark muscovado sugar, about 500g, used that for priming bottles a while back and worked well.

Better Brew Northern Brown Ale tinkering suggestions

Thanks for your reply. Dried yeast, I've used Safbrew Abbaye a few times with good results, anything else you'd recommend? I don't use grain at all atm, read about adding black treacle but not tried it. I am keen to tinker and try different things, always dry hop now too. I recently used a...

Better Brew Northern Brown Ale tinkering suggestions

Hi All, I'm after suggestions on how best to tinker with this 2.1Kg kit. Which hop variety would go well, any particular yeast well suited, fermentables etc? I'm after something around the 5.5-6.0% mark with plenty of flavour. Thanks.

    Dry hopping

Thanks for your help. The brew has been on for 14 days now, with the hops floating in there for half that time. So I guess I'd better get them out and bottle asap. I've previously made 3 brews adding hop pellets and have left them in for 3+ weeks with no ill effects (the Muntons Connoisseur Nut...

    Dry hopping

OK thanks, so they've been in a week now so scoop them out and bin?
  16. R

    Dry hopping

Nope! 4 weeks I normally leave in primary before racking off for a few days then bottle.
  17. R

    Dry hopping

I gave them a stir after a couple of days to wet them, will one stir that be enough? Will leave for 4 weeks in primary.
  18. R

    Dry hopping

Ah, so I should use a bag for plain hops but not needed for pellets maybe.

    Dry hopping

Hi All, Quick question, I added 100g cascade hops to my latest brew (Coopers English Bitter) after 6 days. In the past I've only used pellets which end up in the trub at the bottom but these hops are still floating after a week. Do they normally remain on the surface throughout? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Lesson learnt! I will dump it and do another with less sugar :-)
