Should a thin, or a thick mash, give higher mash efficiency?

I put 32 litres of water in a burco boiler and add 11 lb of crushed pale malt to my BIAB. Mash for 1 hour, drain off liquid into boiler, boil for around 30 minutes, yielding 22 litres of wort. I have never calculated efficiency. Finished beer is close to 3.8% - I am happy with the finished beer...

    No chill

Mashbag and Foxy - the small brewery I am alluding to won the annual best beer in UK a few years ago. Statistically speaking, it is unlikely this was a terrible beer but less terrible than the hundreds of others being judged. But I thank you both for your considerate, polite and on topic...

    No chill

Mashbag- according to the local head brewer, aeration is necessary for his process - and his predecessor bubbled oxygen to achieve it - these people are experts and their income depends on getting it right - or possibly speeding the process up to maximise income.....off topic but I aerate my...

    No chill

Mashbag - fans do not cool air - they just direct it - so the turbulence at the outside surface of a tiny part of the kettle will have a tiny effect on the temperature of the liquid inside the kettle. I try to avoid brewing in July and August because of the time taken to reach yeast pitch...

Starting back with AG basics (for a while at least)

I am happy with two Burcos (with thermostats isolated), an electronic voltage controller and two stainless steel stockpots with lids. I skim off the hot break sludge as it forms, and during fermentation I skim off the sludge twice a day for about 4 days. I bottle with jug and funnel.

    Burnt bottom!

Mashbag, with my TRIAC I get a gentle rolling boil and almost nothing on the heating area, what there is is easily wiped off with a sponge. So any device to lower the voltage is the answer here. They are not expensive and do not need to be installed by a qualified electrician.
