First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Yep, it looked fine on both of mine... They will syphon fine for a while then start glugging... then fine again... then glugs. Thanks Larry - its a combination of those tips that I'm going for :) I guess its a take on the pen lid trick.

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Thanks for the info TI. its an interesting read! Good to know the science behind methods too. I was planning to leave this one for 3 weeks, the last one I think was around 2.5 weeks. Interestingly I just tested my new auto syphon and this one does exactly the same thing. Draws in a shed load...

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Very interesting. Mine is also an auto syphon and had exactly the same as you describe with a lot of bubbles of air being drawn in. I ordered a new one too.but not tested it yet. I've got a batch that should be ready to bottle this weekend. I'll test the new auto syphon with water first to...

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Hi - My water is very soft. I brew using tap water and the water report for my area says it's at the bottom of the scale for hardness. For the brew in question I added a couple of teaspoons of burton water crystals in an effort to bring the water balance up a bit and also a campden tablet...

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Hi - Nope there isn't excess CO2 when they crack. Just a 'normal' hiss then they pour nice and clear with good carbonation. Interesting - seems so much to learn nuance wise, on top of what is already a fairly complicated process!

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Hi - I aerate at around 17-18°C ready for pitching temperature. I'd say the "twang" is musty or stale. Definitely not sharp/sour/chemically. It's hard to describe, but it's exactly the background flavour I associate with a kit brewed beer. Thanks!

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Hi thanks guys. Yep, the caps are sealed well with a nice hiss when they're popped off. I did consider a similar approach with the syphoning. I know there's another method where you can prefill the tube then place it in the fv and draw it out without having to suck. One thing on the hop...

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

Interesting, thanks for the info. Thinking back on the process I'm thinking possibly oxidation. I do recall my auto syphon getting part way through and glugging air. Ironically I used the auto syphon over a conventional one to try and prevent infection. Reading reviews online of it now, it...

First AG Brew - Getting worse with age?

I've brewed a number of kits with varying success over the years, some turning out quite well but all had that underlying home brew twang. A couple of months back I brewed my first batch of all grain following a clone recipe of purity mad goose which is a favourite of mine. A lovely light...

    Bulldog, Evil Dog Double IPA

So mine has been around 4 months in the barrel now and it still tastes awful. Cidery taste remains. Think this one is destined for the drain.

    Woodfordes, Sundew Review

Just tried my first bottle of this. Been in the bottle for 4 weeks. It's not unpleasant but it's incredibly watery. In fact it tastes mainly of carbonated water. I'm hoping as per other reviews the flavour develops over time...

    Bulldog, Evil Dog Double IPA

As an update... Mine was in the FV for around 3 weeks and ended up at 1006 FG. When i tried a sample post-fermentation it had a very unpleasant sour/sharp taste. I put it in a PB 2 weeks ago and it's been sat in the warm for the duration. Trying a sample now it still seems to have a strong...

    Bulldog, Evil Dog Double IPA

I hope so! As I say mines only been in the PB a week in the warm. Given that it's so gassed up I'm not sure if it's right to leave it in the warm doing it's thing for a bit longer or move it out to the garage in the cold now?

    Bulldog, Evil Dog Double IPA

Recently finished fermenting this. Ended up around 8.4% having left it for around 3 weeks to get a stable FG reading. Transferred to a PB with priming solution last weekend, question is how long should I be looking at leaving it in the warm for before moving it somewhere colder? It's certainly...
