    Single Hop Ales

Question for the informed! Are there any hops that don't work as a single hop ale? I'm thinking basic grain bill. Pale malt with a 5% crystal malt addition and a touch of torrefied wheat for body. I have allsorts to use up Thank you

    Is there anything more disappointing...

Than beavering away in the kitchen for 6 hours, waiting two weeks, beavering away for a couple of hours bottling, waiting for a couple of weeks, opening that first bottle and... ppst. The tiniest fish fart of a fizz that fizzles away to a flat pint in seconds. Sigh.

When a recipe just states 'crystal malt'...

Which one do you go for? For example, there is the odd recipe in GH book that states a colour, but mostly it just says crystal. What would you consider a middle of the road, average colour is? The last lot I picked up, without much thought, was 140L. Which I'm now thinking is pretty dark!

Is there an app or program...

That lets you input all the ingredients you have, then spits out possible recipes you can make?

    Rye beers

So, t'other day I had my first rye beer. Guinness Rye Pale Ale of all things. I was pleasantly surprised. Can anyone recommend any other good rye beers that are easily found in the shops for me to try? (And ultimately brew!)

    Small fermenting vessels for sale

Hi all, I have a few small fermenting vessels for sale. First, I have four, 5 litre amber glass bottles with drilled lids for airlocks. £10 each. Second I have two, 9 litre HDPE containers with drilled lids. (For the cautious, these don't have a good safe symbol, but are HDPE2)...

Most compact permanent DIY brew setup?

I'm digging for inspiration here. I'm planning a brewery/bar building for my garden, and I want to make the best use of the space I can in there. So, show me your compact builds! I could of course buy a grain father, but I'm a tight Yorkshireman, so I'm looking for DIY ideas. I'm thinking...

    Beers suited to kegging?

An odd question borne out of necessity. Are there any particular styles of beer that are more suited to kegging than bottling? I am running low on bottles, only having the type of bottle that is more difficult to cap left. (Badger beers etc.) I daren't risk a load of filled bottles that I...

    Spiced honey beer.

Hi everyone, I plan on making the spiced honey beer recipe from GH book at the weekend. Now normally when I make a beer, after it is cooled I sieve it through a 20# filter into the FV, to remove the hops mainly. If I do this with the spiced beer, will I be removing the coriander seeds and...

    Made my first TC

I had a go at a little experiment last night, making my first TC. Not sure if it will turn out OK, but it's cheap! I'm wondering if I should add some sugar though? Here is what I made (in each fermenter) 3 litres Lidl apple juice concentrate 1 litre summer fruit drink 250 ml strong tea...

    Sodium Thiosulphate

Does anyone use this to dechlorinate their water? I have enough of the stuff to dechlorinate a few million litres of water, left over from my fishkeeping days. I appreciate it does nothing for chloramines, but this isn't a problem with my water supply. Thank you

    Small victories

I used a keg for the first time recently, not really successfully. I'm sure everyone is aware of the issues with King Kegs. Anyhoo, my beer may have been as flat as a fart, (last few pints anyway) but it's so clear! I'm amazed. Never had this clarity from a bottle. This is the only upside to...

    Extract to all grain recipe

Hi all, Not sure if this should be in here or the general brewing section. Please move if appropriate. A while back I had a bit of an experiment adapting the pale ale recipe from Greg Hughes' book, to use up my remaining ingredients. I used the exact same ingredients as the pale ale, just...

    A question

Sorry, couldn't think of a better thread title. While watching the not particularly popular Hairy Bikers pub series, something caught my eye. They were in Robinsons brewery, and the manager/owner took Si into the fermenting room. The fermenter was a big open topped thing, and I thought...

    Worth keeping last bottle?

I bottled my IPAlmost tonight (couldn't think of a better name for it!) There was masses of trub/stuff inbthe FV and despite my best efforts a lot got in to the bottling bucket. The last bottle I filled has around half an inch of sediment in it. Is it worth keeping? Or will it taste so off...
