First attempt at cider from an apple tree

Thanks guys. That's the apples starting to fall here in Scotland. Gonna press and freeze till I've got a 19L yield of juice. So I'm clear: Defrost and mix full amount with 4-5 campden tabs Add yeast starter (going with Champagne) Leave to ferment Carbonate through desired route (force carb for...

First attempt at cider from an apple tree

Hey there, I'm planning on using a friend's apple tree to try a cider. For sanitization reasons, I'd naturally be inclined to boil (or perhaps pasteurize) the liquid before fermentation, to ensure everything is clean in my food grade tub. It also allows my to do some hop experiments alongside...

    Galaxy pellets 2018

Seem to be in stock from BrewUK and GerErBrewed. Not sure what the hype is about as they've always been out of stock when I wanted to try them... So bought a few 100g packs to try. Fill yer boots!

    London Fog yeast

Update for anyone interested... I washed this yeast and reused in a new NEIPA. Surprisingly it was a really low 1.007 FG. Resulted in quite a dry finish, which I wasn't expecting... No sign of infection, and no real reason I can think to why it would drop lower and lose the sweetness. Is anyone...

    NEIPA oxidation

Based on that I guess keeping kegs at the lower temperature is a bit of a balancing act, as keeping it at crashed temps of just above freezing will eventually lead to it clearing up (happened to me!) versus keeping it "chilled" to prevent the hazy matter from discolouring as quickly.

    NEIPA oxidation

So you think the idea of adding pectin didn't make any difference? Buying pectin powder was going to be my next adjunct to add to improve haze :smile6:

    NEIPA oxidation

Great thread. I'm currently putting a closed system together which I'm hoping will improve things further. I recently brewed one with London Fog (link below) that came out really well. Only problem is, I chilled the keg twice (for a few hours each time), and the haze has dropped out!!?! Anyone...

    London Fog yeast

As promised, here's my update on the yeast... It recommended a starter, which I created the night before. Began at 1.054 and settled at 1.011, added Ekuanot cryo hops for 3days DH then cold crashed and burst carbed. It said it should finish higher than a normal ale yeast to leave some residual...

    London Fog yeast

Cheers, just spotted that. Looks like it's a decent punt for an NEIPA.... which is good, as I brewed with it last weekend. I'll report back on how it goes. 3.6 Kg M/O 0.6 Kg Wheat malt 0.2 Kg Carapils 0.5 Kg Oats 40g Fuggles 60mins 50g Simcoe 0min steep 50g Eukanot 0min steep London Fog WLP066...

    London Fog yeast

Back in stock at Get 'er Brewed. Just stuck it in a NEIPA. Anyone else used it?

    reusing cacao nibs

Hi, I was keen to see if cacao nibs could be reused once finished in your favourite chocloate brew (e.g. stout) recipe? Curious to see if they can be used either for another stout (cleaned, dried and steralised again)... or for some other use like cooking? e.g. added to flapjacks or whizzing up...

    Force curbing with soda stream

I've not had to refil yet, but it's the standard male thread connection that fits directly on to a normal regulator. Mine says to only fill it with the supplier, but I'm going to take it somewhere local as it's much cheaper. 😁

    Force curbing with soda stream

I had a similar issue when first using the soda stream cannister and adaptor. It seems fairly temperamental as if it's too loose, it leaks... If it's too tight (which you'd naturally do after it leaking) it seems to cut off the supply and choke the gas coming out. ... I eventually saved up and...

Kegged Hoppy (Kettle) Sour - Options

I recently brewed my first kettle sour, and gave it a good dry hopping to add a bit of character to it. I've still got most of it in a corny uncarbd as I was thinking to split the batch and attempt adding different purées to play about with the flavours. (Possibly make a mango one and...

    Hibiscus Saison

So... I brewed this at the weekend. I played about with a few hibiscus tea combos.. and settled on 100g of tea.. and then added the flowers in towards the end of the boil as the colour was a bit more "brown" that I'd hoped. The hibiscus flavour was mild (as planned) and has a nice cranberry...

    Hibiscus Saison

The flowers themselves. I've seen a number of ways to do it... Add towards the end of the boil... Make a tea from them.. or sanitising them for adding to secondary. Ive ordered them from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0096MNGZE/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_2EOPzbCPY996G Will prob make a tea so I...

    Hibiscus Saison

It depends on how much of a purist you are. It's still a saison yeast and the next biggest flavour is the hibiscus. 😀 I'm trying to go a little sweeter as the dry/sour/tart combo might be too much for some of people I'm brewing for... and the Cara should darken the naturally bright pink...

    Hibiscus Saison

I'm looking at putting a recipe for an hibiscus saison. Using the below as a base: https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/49602/hibiscus-saison I'm planning to add a little bit of Cara to sweeten/darken slightly, and potentially add a dry hop cycle with some leftover Nelson. I'm...

    Small gas cylinder for keggerator

Hi, I was looking for a small co2 cylinder for a fridge conversion. The best size looks like a 7Lb cylinder (3.15kg in new money). Does anyone know of either a place in Scotland that does it, or a nationwide supplier? Cheers, Brian.

    Conditioning and temp control

That's interesting, as I'd start to read similar from some recent blogs from folks like Scott Janish, etc. The NEIPA I have in the fridge just now (currently on Day7, using crossmyloof English Ale Yeast @ 16°C) was dry hopped on Day 2... And Im tempted to add the 2nd dry hop addition shortly...
