    Anyone watched Ozark?

Though not for the faint hearted it's well put together imho and possibly someone is trying for a new Breaking Bad? Just finished watching the first season so no spoilers

    Grannys Date Sherry

I know I know....its a bit Niles and Frasier but I have to admit I like sherry/port etc so thought I would try a homebrew approximation. The basic recipe which I have adapted is from a thread here and I will copy it onto the end of this post. I used two 350g packs of Whitworths blocked dates...

    My First WOW

Late reporting my brewdays so will try and catch up now! Did this one at the end of August. Followed the thread video but tweaked the recipe slightly. 1l RGJ 3l Apple juice 850g sugar Starting SG 1105 and finished at 995. Racked onto CT and bentonite. Still clearing. The wife is quite...

    Substitute for white grape juice?

I can't seem to get WGJ round these parts at all. How about substituting some juice out of a cheap wine kit tin, say Youngs Definative Chardonnay for example? It says this has 900g of white grape concentrate. So just as a guesstimate might a third of such a tin be equivalent to a litre of...

    Red Elderberry

I'd never seen these till we moved to Aberdeenshire but we have quite a few very striking trees round about in the hedgerows. Has anyone here tried them for winemaking? I've read that the red variety is the most toxic elder but the fruit is edible - notably used historically by Native...

    Potassium Sorbate

Hi all, Planning on making a date/raisin/prune concoction for a sherry type wine. Instructions for date wine from the brew shop suggest using k-sorbate (for quite a few of their recipies actually by the look of it). Wondered if anyone here uses or used it? I've read on Winemakers...

    Fermentation vessel question.

Hi all, I only have three glass demijohns at the moment. I'm wondering whether after fermenting in glass I could rack into a five litre PET water container to clear without problems? (Sans water btw)... Would the increased area exposed to air provoke too much oxidation (as a five litre...

    To Make Cock Ale

Written by John Nott, cook to the Duke of Bolton in 1726 Take a couple of young cocks, boil them almost to a jelly in water, and put them into four gallons of ale; put in also a pound of raisins of the sun stoned; infuse a pound of dates, mace and nutmegs, of each two ounces, in a quart of...

    Dried Fruit Suppliers

Just reading through CJJ Berry's book and he recommends the colour and flavour of a bilberry over an elderberry wine. Made me wonder if anyone here knows of a good retailer for dried bilberry's etc for country wines? I've looked at a few homebrew online retailers and it seems...

    Anyone use Zork Spk closures?

First came across these on a bottle of meal-deal Tesco moscato and they do appear to reseal very well. Just wondered if anyone had experience of them for homebrew reuse?

    Fermentation Bin Question

I have a standard 5l Youngs fermenting bin and its soon to host a Woodfords barley wine. Would it be good to make a hole in the lid to fit a bung and airlock? The lid is as I bought it and hole free right now. If so any advice on the best way to do it would be appreciated. All the best...

So...my first kit for a while...

And I'm really hoping to make a good job of it! So I was wondering if a tweak might be in order - having read a few threads it seems malt or wort along with hops at some point can boost a kit. Could I therefore ask for specific advice on a kit that is in the post to me - Woodfords Headcracker...

    Another noob saying Hi!

Just to say hello. I did a few kits and some flower/fruit wines when first married but bringing up kids eclipsed all that! They're away to the big world now so I'd like to get brewing / fermenting again. There is a butt load of Meadowsweet nearby (Aberdeenshire) so thought I would try that...

    Minced Raisins?

Hi there, Just getting started (this is my first lost!) and I have the CJJ Berry Winemaking book. His meadowsweet wine recipe asks for a pound of minced raisins. I know this is an old book and just wondered if this is still the best way to do things. Any advice gratefully received :)
