    Free fridge for brewing/kegging

I am giving away an old integrated under counter fridge. It's tatty, but does easily fit a 40 litre FV. Collection only from GL11 area. It's going to the tip on Thursday if no takers.

    Priming with spray malt

OK, I have always used plain old table sugar(or sometimes brown sugar) in the past, jsut though I'd try the spray malt, as it was suggested in the instructions. Maybr Muntons just want to sell more spray malt...

    Priming with spray malt

I just bottled a Muntons Gold Docklands Porter. The kit instructions suggested light spray malt for priming, so I used dark spray malt, which was what I had. Gosh! This stuff is really hygroscopic! My usual method of measuring spoon and funnel got really claggy very quickly. Is there a trick I...

    Sour taste.

Smells OK. Just sour, can't think how else to describe it. Recipe and yeast: I'm only at the kit stage. The one before we moved was a cheap stout kit(can't remember the details). The one I bottled two weeks ago was a Woodfordes Nog. The one that's been in the fermenter for two week is a St...

    Sour taste.

My last three batches of beer have had a sour taste. The first batch that suffered from this was brewed about 8 months before the second two batches, as we moved house and I hadn't got round to starting again. Could some nasty "bug" conceivably have survived in my fermentation equipment for 8...

    Brewing temperature

As for temperature stability, here's the graph for the past two days.

    Brewing temperature

I have three temperature sensors, one in a piece of stainless tube immersed in the brew, one in the fridge, and one for the ambient in the room. I also have an infrared thermometer. They all give different readings. I'll get my multimeter with it's thermocouple out tomorrow, and see how that...

    Brewing temperature

My homebrew kits say to leave the fermenter in a warm place, 18 to 20 celsius. So, having the luxury of a modified fridge, I have been brewing at around 19.6 degrees(provided the temp sensors are accurate, which I doubt). However, the kits(St Peters Cream Stout) also say 4 to 6 days, whereas I...

    Fermentation freezer temp control

eBay, I believe. It was a while back. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Steel-Round-Tube-Pipe-VARIOUS-SIZES-304-GRADE-1-METER-LONG/272646057208?var=571773442384&hash=item3f7af8acf8:m:mGGKIYnpZEcGHQOFOxFJABQ&frcectupt=true Although I probably used 316 grade.

    Fermentation freezer temp control

I bought a short length of stainless steel tubing and blocked off one end with JB Weld. Pushed it through a hole in a rubber bung, and I can drop the sensor down inside. Seems to work well, but I guess it depends on the size of your sensor.

    What are you drinking tonight.

Not tonight, but my wife just took me to Budapest for my birthday at the weekend, and I grabbed two bottles of beer at the airport Spar. At about 80p for each 500mL bottle, I wasn't optimistic, but it turned out I'd hit the jackpot. Soproni Demon caramel malt stout. Fantastic dark beer. Doesn't...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Define easy? Define relatively! I can point you at examples of communicating with google sheets, and possible help if necessary. http://embedded-lab.com/blog/post-data-google-sheets-using-esp8266/

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

I don't have a brewpi, but I haven't used the temperature reading from my floating thing because: a) I want a temperature reading way more often than every two hours, but if I wake the device up every 5 minutes, say, the battery won't last. b) I don't want to be in trouble if my WiFi or the...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

I'm using google sheets. It's free, but you'd have to mod the code, obviously.

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

I used a small LiPo I had left over from a job I did. Probably about 150 -200 mAH. Since my device only wakes up every two hours to send a reading, it lasts weeks. Like somebody who posted earlier on this thread, I was looking at wireless charging - in fact I think I have the same parts thay...

Ye, thanks. Where's your ballast? At the bottom?

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Thanks for the reply. Your points re. calibration do not apply in my case, as my device is entirely self-built and self programmed. I will definitely try to trim the buoyancy to achieve 25 degrees from vertical in clear water, though, for my next attempt. 2p coins won't fit in my tube, by the...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

OK, Thanks for that. I'll make a few adjustment before the next brew.

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Wow! I usually get a range of about 75 to 85, so I probably need to do some adjustment to the centre of gravity or something. Trouble is, there's not a lot of headroom in my fermenter bucket when it's got 40 pints in it.
