    Firkin fill level

A firkin is said to hold 41 litres of beer. However a firkin will actually hold 44 litres of beer. Is the extra space there to allow a 3 litre air/CO2 space, or fill it and allow for 3 litres of trub, cloudy beer etc.?

    DIP Hopping

I am guessing that DIP Hopping for 50 mins. at 70C will yield about 5% IBU's . Anybody know how to calculate this more accurately? Thanks

    RO again!

Hello everyone. I will get to understand this RO water soon:laugh8: I brew in 54 litre batches, as I understand I adjust the RO water with salts for a 54 litre brew. However I use approx. 75 litres of water to get to my final amount of 54 litres. That means I have lost 21 litres of water, this...

    RO Water

Hi, I bought a RO filter and have used it a couple of times. I thought that I had read that it was only necessary to use RO water in the mash water. But while setting up my brew this morning I thought this is probably wrong and I should filter the sparge water as well as the mash water. Thanks...

Serving beer from corni keg with a hand pull

I am looking to serve my beer from my kegorater using a hand pull pump. I want to secondary ferment in the keg , using a spunding valve to control the pressure, then connecting the pump to the out post after removing the poppet valve. Has anybody done this , if so I would appreciate any...

    Failed Bottle Conditioning

I opened a bottle of beer which I bottled 3 weeks ago. It was flat, no conditioning, I could taste the sweetness of the sugar. At this moment I am not too concerned about the cause, I just need to know the best way to get it conditioned quickly as it is for an old school reunion in 2 weeks. My...

    Yeast again, sorry. Help!

I brewed a best bitter 4 weeks ago, loosely based on a TT Landlord recipe. I have ended up with a slightly sweetish taste, which spoils the beer. OG 1.046 FG 1.008 Fermentation time 23 days Ferment temp. 17.5C Yeast West Yorkshire Ale- Wyeast Do any of you experts know what might have gone...

    Low IBU's

Has anybody notice lack of bitterness when using a mesh hop spider in the boil? I usually brew with an IBU of 45 or a lot more. My last 2 brews should have been 60 IBU's +, but have the bitterness of lager. I don't like lager:(

    Mixed beer

As I brew 46 litre batches and use 19 litre kegs I always have some beer left over. I used to bottle it, but now I just mix it with other beers. I had 12 litres of an OK beer and 4 litres of a descent beer. I added the two together and guess what: ONE OF THE MOST AMASSING BEERS I HAVE EVER...

    Clearing pellet dry hope beer

Does anyone know of a way to clear dry hop cloud from beer. Will cold crashing work? If so what temp. and for how long? I know a bit of cloud is acceptable, but I prefer it clear. Just old fashioned. John

    55 year school reunion beer.

I promised to do a brew for my old school friends for July 2019. I know it is a few months away yet. I am thinking 6% ABV heavily hopped. 6 different malts and 6 different hops. To be called obviously "6 of the Best". I plan to brew early enough to let the beer mature for 6 weeks then massively...

    John from N. Yorks.

I started brewing whilst at college 46 years ago. I started again for a short while with BIAB. I got serious about five years ago with a 46 litre AG brewery, due to the fact I have two very thirsty sons! We all love hops and I brew mainly APA's, IPA's and best bitters. I built a hopback out of...
