    New Garage - electric supply

I have a builder quoting me for rebuilding my garage. The current one is an old concrete sectional, it leaks under the walls and the roof is probably only good for another few years. Rebuilding on the same footprint means no planning or building regs issues. It looks like the new one (if the...

Bag in a box shelf life

Have just put some cider into bag in a box containers. They're silvered bags like these ones. I made sure there was as little air as possible in the bag. Anyone have any idea how long the cider will keep in this type of container?

    STC-1000 Gone wrong

I was messing around in the garage, attempting to drill through a tank connector. The best suited drill I have for the job is an ancient low speed drill that belonged to my Grandad - probably not been used since he died in the mid 1970's. So I plug it in and give it a go and not entirely...

    Seat of the pants Belgian

SWMBO is taking the kids and leaving me 'home alone' for 3 days  Seems a shame not to brew on one of those days, will be playing rugby on Saturday but my fermenting fridge is taken up with a lager at the moment. The garage is too cold so this is leading me towards something that will...

    Another Buffalo problem

My Buffalo boiler has been cutting out occasionally during the boil so I removed the thermal cut out from the base and taped it out of the way....I have some of the slightly higher temp rated ones on the way from Amazon. 20 minutes into yesterday's boil it cut out completely. Luckily a 2nd...

Adding an extra element to Buffalo Boiler

Has anyone tried adding an extra element to a Buffalo boiler or similar? Just considering this as an idea for my 40 litre Buffalo...for 2 reasons 1. Quicker brew day - It takes a long time for me to come back to the boil after I've sparged into 2 FV's and tipped back into the boiler (which is...

    Lager yeast starter help please

Last time I did a lager I used 2 packs of dry yeast (W34/70) This time I've got a vial of WLP830. I know pitching rate's important for lager so had a look at MrMalty (using 1054 OG, 7.39 US Galls volume) It's telling me I need 2 vials in a 3.2 litre starter  This isn't going to...

    Which lager yeast?

Looking at doing a lager for the summer. Last year's Stellar Tortoise came out pretty well so I'm sticking close to that, although have had to change the hops around a bit to fit with what I have... Stellar Tortois 2 (Bohemian Pilsener) Original Gravity (OG): 1.054 (°P): 13.3 Final Gravity...

    Anyone harvested Duvel yeast

Got a few bottles of Duvel while they're on 4 for £5 at Tesco. I'm not planning a Belgian at the moment but thought I might as well harvest some of yeast for freezing and future use. Dregs from 4 bottles went into 100g of spraymalt in a litre of water and onto the stirplate, took a couple of...

    Malo-Lactic culture questions

Having done my cider day on sunday I now have 3 batches on the go - 2 of straight apple cider, one of blackberry & apple. Last years cider was very dry (as expected) but also quite acidic - needed some splenda to make it good to drink. So this year I'm hoping to get a malo-lactic fermentation...

    Been offered Chardonnay grapes

One of the secretaries at work overheard me talking about brewing and has offered me a "black bucket full" of Chardonnay grapes from her vine - says they aren't good to eat so they normally go unharvested. I'm a brewer not a winemaker but not going to look a gift horse in the mouth so will see...

    Not an STC-1000

Has anyone used one of these temp controllers? It is a bit cheaper than an STC-1000 but the main reason I was looking at this one is it says it's rated to switch 30 Amps instead of 10 for the STC-1000. At the moment I just want to use it to control a fridge but I was thinking it would give me...

    Rhubarb in cider

I was planning to knock up a quick turbo cider with some half price juice, just a 1 gallon DJ worth Looking out in the garden we have a massive rhubarb plant, so putting 2 & 2 together and hoping I'm not getting 5 what would be the best way to do a rhubarb flavoured TC? I'm thinking leave out...

    AG#11 Cumberland Ale

Brewing tomorrow & haven't done a brewday thread for a while. I was away on a school trip last week, in charge of 161 11-12 year olds from Sunday to Friday. Not surprisingly after the little darlings were tucked up in bed I hit the hotel bar for a couple of pints before bed. Nothing decent on...

    Finings in carbonated corny

I have a brew in a corny that has developed a chill haze during the cold weather. It is already fully carbonated. Would I be able to depressurise and add finings at this stage? Would the finings have any effect on the haze proteins?

There's a rat in my compost. What am I gonna do?

Like the title says, we have suspected a rat stealing from the compost bin for a while. Today the bugger was sat there looking at me when I lifted the lid. I'd like to get rid before it finds its way into the garage, short of putting one of the cats into the compost can anyone recommend a poison...
