    Lidl Mini Keg's

Glad I'm not the only one - I tried to get the bung out of one of their lager kegs and it was an absolute *******! Scratched the top a fair bit (not good if it's made of tin) and got the black bit stuck inside the keg. Eventually I gave up and ordered some online.

Can anyone tell me what style of beer this should be?

If you stick it into the recipe maker on BrewToad, you can easily flip through the styles and see what matches up best.

    Bottling buckets

I just syphon straight from the FV into bottles, then prime in the bottle with ordinary sugar. With two pairs of hands you can whizz through very quickly - one person holds the funnel and bowl of sugar, the other scoops, levels and pours in the sugar. My racking cane thing has one of those...

Conditioning time: on the yeast vs in the bottle

You misunderstand - I know how carbonation works! I'm talking about the general conditioning process, where beers mellow out and subtler flavours come through. Perhaps I should have said "aging" instead?

Does the trub compact in the FV?

Wouldn't say that too loudly mate, you'll get lynched for implying Australians actually drink the stuff! ;)

Conditioning time: on the yeast vs in the bottle

When I mini-kegged & bottled some half-batches last week, they had been sitting on the yeast in primary for a little while - probably the best part of three weeks since fermentation stopped. This was partially deliberate as I was worried about diacetyls from slightly too-warm temperatures during...

FINALLY! A London homebrew supplier: London Beer Lab

Yeah, they're very much still getting set up - the premises is a railway arch piled high with buckets of malt and hops! Still they have 90% of the stuff I'd want.

FINALLY! A London homebrew supplier: London Beer Lab

I'd like to give a MASSIVE shout-out to London Beer Lab (http://www.londonbeerlab.com) for finally bringing homebrew supplies to London! They're located in Brixton (zone 2), making actually convenient for us city folk to get our ingredients in person, without paying loads of shipping and most...

How easy is it to infect a batch due to poor sanitation?

Yeah, I've become a lot more lax recently - although quite reasonably so. I think what did it for me was a guy saying "...but then again, I once dropped a shoe in my wort and it turned fine"! My biggest epiphany was realising that I didn't have to sanitise things before the boil

    Supermalt as a yeast starter?

Just read something about using "Malta" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malta_(soft_drink)) instead of DME for a yeast starter. This an American thing, but I remembered we have Supermalt over here - you often see it in corner shops and the imported foods section of supermarkets. Seems to be brewed...

Whats up with my drinking vessels?

As others have said the glass being bone dry is also important - water has the same "smoothing" effect on those imperfections. That's why when you pour a coke first time it'll fizz right up, but when you top it up it doesn't so much. Funny really, as time goes on glasses get...

Whats up with my drinking vessels?

Hmm, I've been washing my pints glasses normally (i.e. in the dishwasher with detergent etc.) for years and have never noticed a problem. I understand the logic behind the assertion: for bubbles to be produced, the dissolved CO2 must have a "nucleation site" i.e. a rough patch on which a bubble...

    advice on using isinglass

When I use isinglass, I get the ready-mixed sachets from e.g. Youngs - as you say, it can be a pain in the **** dissolving the stuff. With the sachets you just pour it in, gentle stir and leave it for a few days - although I imagine you could probably do it at bottling time as well.

whoops forgot to add protoflock or irish moss??

If you're really worried you can add finings after fermentation. I've had great results with isinglass - you can get ready-mixed sachets that you just pour in a few days before you want to bottle.

French press acting as a Randall JR. Revelation!

Neat idea. I'm just chuckling at the idea of bringing one to a party for the ultimate in beer pretension. "Fosters? Oh sure, but I simply must press it with fresh hops first. Let me get my kit, thank goodness Citra are still in season..."

Brilliant, should just fit. Thanks very much!

Beer King / Party Star mini keg tap - dimensions?

Cheers mate! Do you mind if I ask which tap in particular that is?

Beer King / Party Star mini keg tap - dimensions?

Has anyone got a mini keg (5L) + CO2 dispensing tap system on the go? If so, would you mind measuring the height of the whole thing with the tap fitted? I'm looking into mini-kegs & tap-a-draft systems as they'd save me a lot of space and tedium of bottling every last pint, but my fridge is a...

    Electric coolbox as FV?

After a little thought and some serious goofing off at work, I've come up with a rough idea for how to build one of these myself. 1. Buy cheap coolbox 2. Cut square hole through centre of lid 3. Bolt thin sheet of aluminium to underside of lid, covering as much of the lid as possible. This will...
