White 'stuff' in my bottles of homebrew

Hello, I brewed a beer about 6 weeks ago and noticed when I removed the lid on the fermenter that it had a thin white film on the top. I had a taste which was ok so I transferred to clean fermenter added my priming sugar then I kegged 9 litres and put 10 litres in bottles. I've just noticed that...

    Pressure Barrel help!!!!

If the pressure is too low then the only way to get it back up is put more CO2 in or wait for more to build up. If you've had the dreaded glug then I'd get some gas in and have a party  If it's that low then putting 8g in should not over pressurise it.

    Newbie- pressure barrel question

I just add it as needed. Sometimes like you I get 3 pints then sometimes more. Probably depends on the changes in temp where the barrel is kept. In the summer I rarely had to use CO2 , maybe only near the end of the barrel. Just make sure air does not go through the tap into the barrel as that...

Any tips for a nervous first time barrel

I would fill it with water to check you have no leaks on the tap. Speaking from experience it is a pain mending a leak after you have added the beer  and make sure you have turned the barrel tap off after sterilizing it before syphoning the beer in  experience again :oops...

Could someone give me some answers?

I've heard of people having trouble with Hobgoblin bottles but not any you are using. My only thoughts are could you have a bad batch of crown caps ? if all your problems come from the same pack then I'd get some more caps and try them.

St Peters Ruby Red Ale review

Just a quick update on this brew. I posted 3 weeks ago and I was worried because it was the first brew I had done that had the home brew twang. Well after 3 weeks in the keg it has totally changed and is now a very nice beer with no twang at all. Slightly sweet taste and a nice hoppy after...

    8g CO2 Injector problems

Does your valve have a wide rubber band round the bottom ? If it has the gas could be coming from there, it's a safety valve so if the pressure gets to high it releases through the rubber.

Could someone check my recipe please

Thanks for the replies. 30 mins does sound right in hind sight, the recipes I found online were for 5 or 6 gallons and I'll take a look at brewmate. Thanks for your time.

Could someone check my recipe please

Hello, I've been given 2 cans of Coopers amber extract 1.5 kg each and I'm wanting to brew a beer loosely based on Old Speckled Hen. I've tried using brewtarget but I'm not sure that I'm doing it right especially the batch size part. I want to end up with about 15 litres of beer as that would...

Beer starter kits with pressure barrel vs those without

If you think he will mainly brew lager then I would definitely go for the bottles because it will carbonate in the bottle and be fizzy when poured (if left long enough to condition). I prefer bitter which in my opinion tastes wrong if it is fizzy. If you go to a pub and buy a pint of bitter it's...

Beer starter kits with pressure barrel vs those without

If you want your beer fizzy then go for the bottles as the barrels don't hold enough pressure to carbonate beer. If you want a pub style bitter then go for the barrel. Hope that helps.

Cleaning a glass with an activator..

Me and the missus were sharing a bottle of home brew and both used a stella glass with a nucleated base. Mine kept the head all the way to the bottom, but hers lost it nearly straight away. She said it was because she had lip balm on ( I knew she wasn't just a pretty face ....... especially...

    Pressure barrel question

Does it have a rubber valve covering the hole ? If it has, carefully lower it down with your finger nail to release a little gas. Because CO2 is lighter than the air in the barrel the air will be pushed out leaving CO2 covering your beer. Hope that helps.

Beer in a 5 gallon keg

As long as everything was sanitised correctly it should keep for many months. If it did start to taste dodgy then either drink it quicker :drink: or as a last resort, poor it down the drain.

    Coopers, English Bitter

I brewed this to a recipe on the Coopers web site called Extra Smooth Bitter using brew enhancer and molasses. It came out at 4% ABV and even early on it was very drinkable. I kegged most of it and filled a few bottles, the bottled was ok but I always find the fizz does not suit this type of...

St Peters Ruby Red Ale review

Thanks for the reply Russ, that's cheered me up a bit. I thought I must have done something wrong with it being the first time I've had the dreaded twang. Looks like it will be my Christmas beer. :D

St Peters Ruby Red Ale review

I've just kegged this today after 2 weeks in the FV and it's the first kit I've done that has that home brew twang :( I'll give it a month and then have a taste to see if it's improved .Fingers crossed.

    Using 2 yeasts

Hi, I'm brewing a Coopers Stout this week and I'm thinking of doing a recipe from the Coopers web site that says it could benefit if I used a second sachet of yeast. Does the yeast have to be the same ? I'm thinking of using the yeast in the kit and a sachet of Gervin ale yeast if that will be...
