Put me first ever home brew on last night :) Some issues...

not heard of hydrating the yeast before...will try it when i get about 10 kits for chrimbo! is it just that it starts fermenting quicker ?

    whats going on??

thanks for that, fellow slap ed! would you 2nd ferment after another week or finings in two days before bottling or just bottle? i normally brew for a week and a half then 2nd ferment for a week

    whats going on??

:o i have had a wilco blonde lager in the FV for 8 days now and its still bubbling away like mad, i used normal granulated for the first time cos i read it on here and i had run out of brewing sugar, could that be a cause?? :wha:

Can you lift a full FV by the handle?

i lift with handles but still dont trust them fully so only lift a couple of inches from the floor :thumb:

First Brew in the FV - Rookie mistakes...

nah, think i've read that the yeast isnt damaged until around 37 deg. anything between 18-28 is fine but the lower it is the longer fermentation will take.

    top up

is it ok to , say, top up a keg thats down to 10 litres with a new brew ?

Put me first ever home brew on last night :) Some issues...

i think the above post of wrapping a blanket or bubble wrap round it is good but 17.5 isnt ideal but i think it will ferment at that just a lot slower.......

    Beer kit advice....

different beer kits (and/or different finings) clear at different rates also factor in different values ie.temp. stored at . having said that some posts say they have done everything right but still wont clear!

    oops!

i racked two 40 pint brews today(both woodfords wherry). after i had done them i realised that i had prime sugared again and also put finings in again! i usually leave it for a week in second fermentation but having done this is it better to leave a bit longer??
  13. O

    fermenting time

i have only ever ( about 15 kits! ) kept the first fermentation in the vessel for max of 8 days, reading some of the posts in here some keep it much longer, what roughly is the max before its likely to go bad? :wha:

    crown caps

are there different quality of these? i have used wilco ones but 2 or 3 bottles decompressed nothing serious as i keg most of mine but the odd lager i do, i bottle. just wondering really...... :wha:
