    No sparge BIAB

Interesting - I have some way to go, clearly. I think a bigger bag is my next step. Why would anyone go for a 3 vessel setup if it's possible to get 80%+ efficiency with BIAB?

    No sparge BIAB

I'm on BIAB#5 - did an Exmoor Gold clone today and got a good efficiency out of not sparging I've worked out my water volume - 32 litres for a 25 litre batch. But this time, after reading some stuff in other forums, I decided not to sparge. I put the full 32 litres into the mash tun, and...

    Efficiencies

I use brewer's friend - http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/calculator/, it's pretty easy and free. There are different measures of efficiency, but I think for most home brewers we mean 'how much of the possible SG do you manage to get out of the grain'?

All set for BIAB, but no wort chiller.

I do BIAB and have no wort chiller. What I do is empty the boiled worth into the FV, clean the mash tun, then put the FV into the clean mash tun. Then I fill it full of cold water, allow the wort to cool a bit, empty the water, fill it up etc. Takes about an hour to get it down to pitching...

    Old Style Lager Recipies

IMO, lager is the most underrated beer of all. It seems to be the hardest of all beers to brew, and a great lager is every bit as good as any other great beer. I've been to Prague several times and believe me, proper beers like Budvar and Staropramen over there are mind blowing. And yet most...

    Wilko's golden Ale question

I brewed some of this and it never really cleared, not even after four months in a bottle. I blame the yeast.

Clumping yeast - what did I do wrong?

I noticed the pack was bigger, but it was still pretty slow. Seems good now though, and it's attenuated further and faster than I was expecting. It's got down from 1.041 to 1.008 in 4 days - after taking a day and a half to get started! The krausen is down now, and I usually find that it will...

Clumping yeast - what did I do wrong?

Thank you for all the replies. As it happened, it started fermenting overnight last night, so yes, I think I do have to put it down as a slow starter. Was just very surprised it took quite so long - in the past the lag with other yeasts has been 12-24hrs max And @Vossy - yes it did look a bit...

Clumping yeast - what did I do wrong?

On my tenth brew and 4th AG I used Malt Miller's West Coast Ale Yeast yesterday but after 24 hours it hasn't started fermenting. Instead, I've seen some large clumps of yeast floating in the wort. I've just given it another good stir, to see if the extra oxygen will help. But I'm trying to work...

FIRST AG BREW DAY BIAB #1 PICS

Interested to see you chill by sticking it in a trugg. I do something very similar but it seems to take a while and lots of changing of the ice water. How often do you have to change, do you have to attend to it constantly, and how long does it take?

    is AG worth the expense?

I've just moved to BIAB. Had my first proper pints of it at the weekend and it was way better than any kit or extract brew. It was also better than many pints I've had in pubs. In fact, I'd paid £4 for a decent but not sensational pint in a craft ale pub in Bath the week before. My beer was...

    First AG brew.. recipe recommendations?

I can tell you from my recent experience that making the switch from kits/extract to all-grain will be challenging enough in itself. Trying to come up with a recipe as well will give you one more thing to worry about. Definitely go with something simple, and tried and tested. In the end, I...

    Coopers IPA review

I brewed this as instructions, though with brewkit enhancer rather than sugar. I also added 250g steeped crystal malt Challenger hop tea (30g for 30mins) Dry hopped with 30g Challenger It's OK, very bitter and to be honest, I'm on the edge of not enjoying it that much (though I've drunk 35...

    Newbie Leaking Pressure Barrel

I had a similar problem with the tap on one of my barrels. The advice given to me was to lay the keg flat with the tap facing upwards, remove and replace the tap then put the keg back upright. You would probably lose the carbonation from secondary fermentation, but can always add some more sugar...

How bad does beer taste when it has spoiled?

@jkp - well, it could have been in direct sunlight a bit. That said, this is England in December and there aren't many sunny days! But the patio is pretty shaded and I moved it to a completely shady spot after a week. Also, temps outside haven't been more than 10c at their warmest and the nights...

How bad does beer taste when it has spoiled?

I've got my first lager lagering and I'm worried it has spoiled. It was an extract brew and everything had gone fine up till now. When I tasted the hydrometer sample after primary fermentation had finished 2 weeks ago it was good. I put it outside to lager about two weeks ago, and it's been...

AG Brew #1 - with pix and question about volume

Thanks. I checked out the maxi BIAB thread, but if I understand it correctly it's for people who don't have a brew pot big enough to do the whole thing. I just got my 50l tun/kettle so I assume I don't need to do maxi BIAB? I think I just have to get my head properly round water volumes for my...

AG Brew #1 - with pix and question about volume

Thank you all for the advice - I shall have a good think and try to get my head round boil volumes. And I had wondered whether to abandon the bag for the hops, so I think I may well do that next time. Not cheeky at all to ask for the recipe MyQul. No idea how it will turn out though, but here...

AG Brew #1 - with pix and question about volume

Interesting. Thanks Pittsy. The grains were from a kit I bought - so I guess they were assuming I would have a higher efficiency. But I do actually have loads of others in my ingredients box. Should have bunged a few in...
