I have just started a Thomas Coopers Brew A IPA.
http://store.coopers.com.au/thomas-coopers-brew-a-ipa-1-7kg.html
This is a one can kit as normal from Coopers, but new to their range, and now available in the UK along with a few other new ones.
The weather will be slightly cooler here in the south of England for the next few days and my stock needs boosting so I decided to brew although the current temperature is about 22*C and more than my preferred 19*C.
I hadn't the time to boost/pimp the kit so just used
- 1.7kg kit can
- 500g Medium DME
- 500g Dextrose
- 7g kit yeast hydrated in 27*C boiled water before pitching.
Brewed short to just under 21 litres, OG 1.043ish.
It didn't exactly come over with 'tropical, citrusy, grapefruit notes' as Coopers blurb but I intend to dry hop later with 25g Cascade and 25g Centennial so that should go some way to putting that right.
I will report back later.
Anyone else done this?

Update....
It's been a steady nine days to get to the end of the primary, at about 20*C ish. This is unusual for Coopers yeast, they are normally done withing five days in my experience. The yeast was certainly only a few months old according to the date stamp on the packet. My conclusion is that the yeast supplied is a different type to 'normal'.
Anyway, I have now racked off and added the dry hops, which will rest with it for a further six days.
I did have a small taster. It was quite malty even on the nose, but otherwise a bit uninspiring. However it's early days yet and the dry hop should hopefully give it a big lift.

do you feel its worth 12 quid as a 1 can kit ?
Not got to properly try it out yet i.e :drink:.
As 1.7kg kits go it's not a bad price. You will certainly pay more elsewhere, like I did.
Coopers kits usually come good if sometimes a bit uninspiring, and provide a good base for a boost or simply a dry hop as I have done this time.
I would rather buy this kit at 1.7kg rather than a 1.5kg kit.

i may give this a go without tweaking with hops or anything as i haven't the knowledge on it yet

Dry hopping is simple to do, and will really enhance a one can beer kit. What's more you get satisfaction from personalising your brew.

And if you don't have a LHBS near you Balliihoo (online supplier) only charge £2.50ish for P&P for packs less than 2kg so you can buy a few different hops to try.

I like the Balihoo site Terry, my next hop shop will be from there I think.

thank you for the info sources, i will have a look at them when i get a few mins free + i think i will try doing a 1 can kit without hopping it . yes i will add yeast nutrient and extra sugar but i want to see what its like without the hopping and then do it again with the hops :)

Bottled mine today after 9 days in the FV to finish the primary, followed by racking then a further six days dry hop.
FG 1.008 from OG 1.043.
Looks an amber colour, rather than a light AIPA colour.
Taster not overly citrussy.
Give it two weeks carbing and then some more I'll give the first one a try.
I have to say I am not too optimistic about this one. Hope I'm proved wrong.

methinks any kit new or established ones need brewing straight with no messing to see if you like what is standard first.time enough to tweak it later ons if need be
Godsdog; I agree... up to a point.
Premium kits shouldn't really need any tweeking at all.
The start point for one cans however is usual additional fermentables, plus a dry hop of something which compliments the kit style. Without the dry hop they always seem to come up short.

Tried one tonight....after just over a week in the bottle but had carbed up (I use PET) and had 24 hours in the fridge to encourage the yeast to settle. So very young but, as it turned out, drinkable.
Not as fruity as the Coopers Real Ale. Quite bitter which lingers in the mouth, which may be the kit but may be the effect of the 25g each of Centennial and Cascade dry hop. Some grapefruit to the taste.
Amber in appearance rather than golden.
May turn out to be better than I had thought it would. Which is good because I have a second kit can in my store..... :thumb:
Worth a go if you are thinking of trying one from Wilko.

Just tried one of these. 2 weeks in the fv, three weeks in secondary and bottled a week ago. Still needs longer to carb up but what a cracking pint. I used 1.5kilo LME along with the kit. ABV 6.1% darker in cloud than I expected but a really light tasting IPA. Slightly sweet but longer in the bottle should tidy that up. Definitely brew this one again.

hi..(right thread now)
put this on 48 hours ago and only this morning has the fermentation started and very slowly not rigorous and no krausen as up to yet but definite bubbles not going mad at present after having a peek inside the FV.just wondering if along with terrym and any others that's brewed it that its a slow burner by default as I was a tad worried that the dried yeast had failed

I can't see how Coopers can call this an IPA with the description "Its tropical, citrusy, grapefruit notes and toasty amber malt balances the clean, hop filled, bitter finish." without providing extra hops for dry hopping?

Every 1-can kit I've made over the last 5 years has needed additional hops to turn them into hoppy brews. Straight out of the can all these kits are malty with very little hop flavour: I guess the production process kills off most the hop flavour.

What am I missing?

+1 from me.
Spot on

Started this last night with 1.5kg of light spraymalt and used a safale us 05 yeast as per recipe off the coopers Web site. It's getting a dry hop of 25g each of citra and cascade when primary ferment dies down.
It's bubbling steadily at about once every two seconds..

Cheers

Clint

Update. ..looks like a slow burner. ...got in 7 ish this morning and the krausen was pushing through the airlock and bubbling had increased.

Cheers

Clint
