I think it is chlorine in swimming pools and fluorine in drinking water. I do not know whether more sanitising chemicals are added during the summer, but will make some enquires.

Please feel free to remind me on this one, if I do not report back in the next few days. I think it is a very interesting question and I should be able to find an informed response.

Chlorine, monochloramine, and chlorine dioxide are used in combination to disinfect drinking water in the UK and pretty much all of Europe. Fluorine is added in the US, in addition to chlorine and monochloramine.

There seems to be some suggestion that fluorine is added in the US to improve tooth and gum health, but how true that is I don't know. I suspect it's just a disinfectant, and people who realise fluorine is used in toothpaste have made assumptions- a case of "a little bit of knowledge". Taking steps to protect the oral health of the public seems a little bit socialist for the US :grin:.
