I used to do the same as darrellm. Used a aquarium heater from the range. £5. After a bit of trial and error using a thermometer got it to about 20 degrees and did my first 5 brews that way.

I've got two of them on the go and I also use them for keeping the pressure barrels at optimum temperature for carbonation.
