planning AG #2 (and #3, and #4...)

I want to make a nice red IPA in a modern style, so I thought I'd have a crack at coming up with a recipe in Beer Engine. do you think this will work?

Final Volume: 25 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.052
Final Gravity: 1.013
Alcohol Content: 5.1% ABV

Grain bill:

Vienna Malt 470 grams 8%
Torrefied Wheat 525 grams 9%
Cara Red 470 grams 8%
Pale Malt 4410 grams 75%

Hop schedule:

Nelson Sauvin Whole 12 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 21 grams 25%
Nelson Sauvin Whole 12 % 60 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 21 grams 25%
Nelson Sauvin Whole 12 % 20 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 21 grams 25%
Nelson Sauvin Whole 12 % 10 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 21 grams 25%

Plus some more thrown in for dry hopping.

Yeast: WLP001

It's certainly going to be a full bodied beer with a punchy bitterness. I have only used Nelson Sauvin in paler beers so it will be interesting to hear how it works in a beer with a bit more body and colour.

too heavy to be an IPA, then? i've had some red IPAs recently (the Brodie's one springs to mind) that didn't seem heavy at all.

I don't know about too much body. You will get some body, colour and aromatic falovours from the vienna. The cara red will give you the deep red colour you are after and also add some body. The torrified wheat will add alcohol and help with head retention.

It should be good, WLP001 will certainly help ferment it out a bit. American Pale Ale is a such a large genre that you can really take it any way you want.

There are no rights and wrongs. The fun it in the experimenting.
