A friend has recently mentioned that he loves my homebrews but that the last 2 or 3 have had a slight metallic aftertaste, something that i've never noticed.

Thinking about it i'm wondering if it has anything to do with my 15lt stockpot that I use to brew 12l batches of BiaB.

It's a year old and has a slightly burnt looking inner base, I assume from the 1 hour rolling boil, i've tried to clean it but to no avail.
My older 12lt pot is still pretty shiny and has had just as many uses.

Could this possibly be the reason ???

Could well be. Looks like Beerstone which can stop the stainless steal from passivating.

Show your kettle a little TLC by cleaning and repassivating as per this article.

I found a soak in Starsan solution was effective at removing beer stone. Soak, then clean with a Scouring pad for non-stick pans, repeat until clean and then passivated as outlined above. My kettle had beerstone like this after the first 6 months of brewing, once I started treating my brewing water (which is quite high in Carbonate) this problem stopped. Although I didn't get metallic taste to my beer.

Many thanks Sadfield, just when I think i've got my head round all the problems of homebrewing something else crops up that i've never ever heard about............'beerstone', 'repassivating'.

I always use bottled water so hopefully that wasn't the cause, i'll give those articles a thorough read and hope I can rectify this problem.

Cheers again :thumb:
