Do people still buy porn mags now the internet is so widespread? Why buy a cow when you can get the milk for free, or something!
If I thought a UK home brew magazine would achieve half the sales of average jazz mag, I'd be launching one straight away, and have backers who'd cover the up-front costs!

Since the numbers of LHBSs is small and dwindling, most homebrewers must do a lot of online supplies purchasing nowadays. Therefore they also have access to online stuff about brewing, including this forum, so the market for hard copy publications is quite small I would imagine, and so all that remains are those willing to pay for an online publication, which must hardly be enough to sustain its existence.

There seems to be a lot of people who want to talk a good idea into the deep.
I have bought BYO for a few years now and every time i'm enjoying the new issue, I wish, that I could have a similar magazine from the UK instead. UK has a fantastic history regarding beer and iMO there must be a lot wanting to read more about home brewing with real cask, visiting UK breweries, info about english hops, malts etc. And UK recipes...
The idea of starting an online magazine was very good. It's a shame to talk it down when some people would like to give it a try.
I'm from Denmark and I would rather be reading an UK version of Brew Your Own than reading all the American stuff...

I've been searching for a local homebrew mag but to no avail.I think it would certainly be a great idea but would like to assume that it would also cover that wee island to the west as Ireland is also steeped in a lot of brewing history.I say go for it.:thumb:

I am new to brewing and I was real surprised here was no magazine for U.K, Ireland or Europe. I think there could be a role for one. As a magazine publisher by profession i have been mulling it over for a few weeks. Forums are invaluable but a magazine offers something different. Gonna look into it and start some sector research and crunch some figures might be a goer, might not.

A magazine would be great. Hopefully it will work. One piece of advice. Use the knowledge of the forum members, so much knowledge on here and other forums.
If you do start one make sure there is discount forum membersðŸâÅ

I think Muntons sold over 600,000 beerkits last year,thats only 1 company and 1 type of brewer,there is a big brewing community and i think it would work, i would purchase one anyway, online is good but i prefer reading the old fashioned way ðŸâÂ

Could it be that the USA has a bundle of homebrew mags because that's where the new ideas are? The Americans seem to be more willing to experiment with, and spend a packet on, the hobby. Examples that spring to mind are small scale mashing equipment (the proper stuff, not converted cool-boxes), decent kegging containers and conical fermenters. I'm not sure whether the UK approach to homebrew has sufficient vigour or capital to support a dedicated magazine. Incidentally, the latest conical fermenter - Catalyst - was financed by crowdfunding. If someone were brave enough to start up a UK magazine, that might be a way to raise the cash!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but have any of you guys heard of 'Ferment' magazine? I've just been handed a copy of issue 11 by a printer friend and while it's craft beer rather than home brew (there's a small element of home brew in this issue) it's definitely of interest.

i have a couple at home- but agreed - its more of a craft brew magazine than a home brew magazine
