Just been discussing this here as I'm getting a Wherry on the go tonight too. It seems quite a few people get stuck fermentations with it and I'm hoping to avoid that!

Did a Wilko's £18 Wherry kit a while ago kegged 20 pint bottled 18, drank the keg now on the bottles good brew for the price keg seem's a better and clearer brew..

FV 1 & 2, empty :?
Demijon 1 & 2 empty :(
Keg 1, conditioning, Wilko's Hoppy Copper bitter with added dark malt plus Goulding hops bag
Keg 2, just emptied it :(
Bottled, conditioning, Hoped honey mead No 2 :P
Bottled, Woodfordes Wherry :drink:
Bottled Hoped honey mead No 1 :drink:
On shelf, Woodfordes Wherry, to do this weekend
Good luck

Yep, that's what I'm going to do. Plus a bit of a whisk and a stir to aerate. I will have mine temperature-controlled in a water bath at a constant 20C, so I know it wont be a temperature problem if it gets stuck. Good luck - we'll compare notes later!

sounds like a good plan of attack...
i always use a whisk and a long spoon...
but this yeast rehydraton thing will be the first time for me ...
so fingers x i get it right ...

I've done mine tonight Mick. All went smoothly, I think. 21.5 litres gave me 1.044,which is exactly what I was after.

I rehydrated at 25c BUT I just saw an article by Aleman on this forum suggesting that Muntons use the Nottingham strain and that it should be rehydrated at 30c. Too late for me, fingers crossed, but you might want to check it out.

PS Muntons make the Woodforde kit, apparently.

thanks scott says to do it to 35c so ill be doing that ...
i think as long as its not to hot it will be ok ...
and yours at 25c cant be to hot so i think youl be ok ...
fingers x as you say ...
ill also be doing it to 20ltrs not 23ltrs...
as i read on google its a bit thin ...
so this should help...

Not much going on in the FV yet this morning: 10 hours since pitching. I'm sure it will go eventually, but I've had them full of life by now before.

This (click here) seems like an excellent article on rehydrating and it certainly looks like I should have gone in at a higher temperature. I'm sure ScottM is right to suggest 35C (EDIT - this sheet on the Nottingham strain suggests 30-35 is the range - IF it is Nottingham.)

Using Mr Malty's yeast calculator here (1 Litre=0.264 US Gallons) it looks like the kit needed 10g of dry yeast really, assuming 90% viability: it only comes with 6g. I may well pitch in a bit more Nottingham later today, to make sure it gets right through.

morning bud ... :thumb:
i've never used the rehydration method before ...
so i dont no how long before you see/ hear it doing its thing ...

i find doing it the normal way ...
it starts to bubble after about 18 to 24 hrs after ...

so should be faster than that

I've had a gap of about 8 years in brewing (so I'm relearning and learning more all the time!), but the records I kept before show that the Gervin English Ale yeast I rehydrated (Nottingham strain, apparently), sometimes produced a thick yeast head within 9 hours!

Anyhows, even though there were some early signs of action on the wort later this morning, I've pitched in an 11g pack of properly (I hope) rehydrated Gervin from, Wilkos, following Danstar's instructions for Nottingham. Better to over-pitch than under pitch, I thought, seeing how many people report stuck fermentations with the Wherry kit.

Be very patient with this one. I read so many good reports so I gave it a go, I think I rushed it and now I'm disappointed in the result, I do have a second Wherry conditioning, which I added 500g enhancer to, that seems to be doing better... Time will tell

ok so i got around to doing this 2 can kit 2day ...
i messed up a few bits but such is life ... ;) .

ok first thigs first i sanitised every thing then...
i heated the 2 cans in very hot water for 10mins...
then in the fv they went followed by 6 pints of boiling water ...
i gave this a dam good stir for about 10 mins ...
and topped it up with cold water to about 21/22 ltrs...

i was only going to brew it to 20ltrs but as i said i messed up ...
it was to hot so i added more cold till i got it down to 18/20c...
thinking my rehydrated yeast will be ready to use ...
but i killed the yeast mess up no 2...
so off to the brew shop and got some more yeast ...
and this time i just pitched it as it was ...
the hydrometer reading was 1.044 ...
so i shut the lid tapped it down...
then put in my air lock and new grommet...
filled it with vodka up to 1 and a1/2 bubbles..

job done...

hers a few pics...

How's it going Mick?

Mine went like a rocket after I pitched extra yeast, down to 1.015-16 in 3.5 days. It's still crawling past 1.013-14 nearly 6 days on, so I'm leaving it a bit longer to make sure it's totally done...But it tastes really promising! One of the best samples I've had this early in the process. Very hoppy.

Pretty much decided to skip the secondaries and go straight to the keg in a day or two, with some gelatine.

You can use it (dissolved) as finings, to help the beer clear quicker in the keg. I used it successfully in the past. There'll be info on here I'm sure. Not vegetarian friendly if someone drinking your beer cares, but then isinglass is from fish.
