Helpful tread, thanks. I started on kit brews 9 brews ago and was planning to stick to partial boils a little longer but sighted a 32l pot in the local home brew shop! I was also worried about hop utilisation with a 6l boil and expected disolving 4.4kg of dme for an imperial stout could be challenging.

I'd missed the instruction to disolve the dme while the water was cooler. The clumps in the partial boils were annoying, not to mention the steam making the dme powder stick to everything it goes near!
 
Is it worth trying to skim the hot or cold break or does the hop trap prevent the break material going through to the primary?
