I've got two kegs, I've cut the tops off and want to drill holes for taps. Am I right in thinking 21mm for 1/2" BSP?

It also looks like there will be a fair bit of dead space - anything I can do to reduce it, or just live with it?

Last question, electric or gas?!

Cheers

20-21mm for a 1/2" bsp threaded fitting, i used 20mm for my stockpot build and some fittings would need screwing through the hole so 21mm with the thicker keg wall where screwing thru wouldnt be an option sounds spot on.

shame you cut the tops off, if u inverted them and used the sankey entry port for a bottom drain you would have little or no deadspace

if going electric avoid elements requiring Big diameter holes as the curve of the keg and wall thickness will work against sealing easily. the 2 x small hole pigtail and U elements or even the long bendable ones, would be my first consideration.

Hi Fil,

Thanks for that. Thought about the bottom drain but I think I'll probably use a gas burner (less holes). Guess I'll have to live with it! Thanks again.

Haha! Definitely legit - permission and everything! Counter flow chiller finished, trying to decide on batch or fly sparging now.

good news ;)

batch sparging is much easier, to start with, i tried fly sparging and found it too tricky to balance the flows and after batch sparging once have been batch sparging since, any efficiency loss can be accommodated by adding a handful or 2 of extra malt to the mash ;)

sounds like its time to start posting pics or the brewporn ;) are you gonna polish the kegs ??

I've got some micromesh 2500 and 3000 grit. Once I've sanded them should get a mirror finish. Once done I'll put some pics up.

I took some advice -used a Q-Max cutter and got a perfect tap hole in both kegs. I was a bit dubious that they would cope with the thickness of the keg walls, but absolutely no problem. I've measured the dead space (without any pipework in yet), 6 litres (due to the curved bottom of the keg). Will this reduce when I put the pipe/false bottom in?
