I'm on my second Grainfather brew. Just taken a pre-boil reading and have 1.062 against a target of 1.040. Mashed 4kg of pale and 250g of dark crystal at 66c.

Any ideas? that's 106% mash efficiency!!!

Realised what I did. I took the sample straight out of the recirculating arm without letting it run for a bit meaning I got a load of wort post mash and pre-sparge. I realised this when I did the same thing post boil and the sample was only 30c. Another one to go in the experience book. The correct OG was 1.042 (post boil) so near enough spot on.

Was racking my brains for ages as temps and volumes were all ok.

got there in the end tho ;) i was gonna suggest temperature but reading at too high a temp without correction would under report on the gravity??

It took me ages for fathom out I get the same reading every time...dooo!
Me n my small brain.
Seems 1.062 come into it a lot lol
Now cooling it...and the FG is spot on..

It was a real mystery for a while. Glad I figured it out as it would've been even more confusing when I took the post boil reading and it was right.
