Hi all,

I've just brewed the Brewmaker IPA kit and am trying to understand the ABV calucations.

My starting gravity was 1.040 and my finishing gravity was 1.008 (before bottle conditioning).

Using http://www.brewersfriend.com/abv-calculator/ I've calculated that my beer is 4.2%.

The kit instructions say that the beer should end up at about 4.8%.

Does anyone have a view on what is going on here?

Thanks,
Jamie

Does the kit say what the start gravity and final gravity should be?

You can normally add possibly 0.2 for priming which in this case would bump it up to 4.4.

I find a lot of kits fall short of their estimated abv, assuming of course you mixed everything in thoroughly and stirred well and topped up to the amount required. how much and what fermentables did you add?

My dad did that kit as his first every HB, I cannot remember a great deal about it off the top of my head but I remember it was a pretty decent pint, especially for his first go.

I don't get too hung up on ABV. Just make sure it has finished fermenting and all will be fine. If you do want to know, work to your figures not the ones stated on the packet.

Good luck and I hope your beer turns out great!
