So I'm thinking of doing a 10 litre brew

2kg Pale malt
100g crystal
100g amber

then using challenger and Cascade hops.

I had a go at working out the IBU and out came out at 32.5? will this be really bitter or not?? i thought i read somewhere that a standard IPA would be between 40 and 70

Yes 32 is pale ale territory (25-35 IBUs), a lot of commercial beers fall between 25 and 35 IBUs. IPAs are 40 and above, often 50-60.

thanks, could you advise on the hopping additions as in shall i start with

10g challenger- 60 mins……...

I'd go for something like this, 33 IBUs, but compare your hop Alpha %s with mine:

5.0 g Challenger Leaf (9.3% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes
7.0 g Cascade Leaf (9.2% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes
7.0 g Cascade Leaf (9.2% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes
7.0 g Challenger Leaf (9.3% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes
10.0 g Cascade Leaf (9.2% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes
10.0 g Challenger Leaf (9.3% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes

Try this then, 35 IBUs...

5.0 g Challenger Leaf (11.52% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes
10.0 g Cascade Leaf (4.97% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes
10.0 g Cascade Leaf (4.97% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes
10.0 g Challenger Leaf (11.52% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes
10.0 g Cascade Leaf (4.97% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes
10.0 g Challenger Leaf (11.52% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes
