I have a couple of half packets of yeasts from doing 5l brews and am thinking that rather than use the remainder should grow up a culture to use over the next few months as i experiment further.

The main benefit I see is that I will not be harvesting yeasts and therefore no risk of contamination, no need to wash and no real wait for sufficient growth

The plan is to put say 1.5l of wort (dme to 1.040 or so) and yeast in a container and let it brew out, pour off beer and split yeast into 2 and repeat, then use one and split the other, etc.

i think i should be able to use one every fortnight?

if unused then just place in fridge and restart when required

is this going to work do you think?

Yup.I do this although I use 2L of starter wort to split into two and the one I'm going to pitch I put into another 1L of wort and pitch at high krausen rather than let it ferment out
