WLP001 for a pale ale?

I have WLP001 in the fridge and I want to brew a pale ale.

Most pale ale recipes call for English Ale Yeast, or Dry English Ale Yeast, to show off the malty profile of the brew.

Would using WLP001 for a pale ale be a mistake? Should I brew an IPA instead?

WLP001 would work well. If you do some searches on blonde ale or golden ale (which are of course a pale ales) they say use a neutral yeast like one of the chico strains and let the hops shine through. eg https://learn.kegerator.com/blonde-ale/

WLP007 is a great English yeast it's a bit drier than 001. Used in a Jaipur clone and other pale ales.
