hi all, this is a weird one...

I brewed up some Geordie Scottish Export (contradiction in terms!) on Thurs night, a nice big 40 pinter with OG 1.038.

Vigerous fermentation Fri as expected, already showing no bubbles in the FV Sat morning so I thought I would take a quick gravity reading to see just whats been happening (it will stay in the FV another 10 days regardless, Im just intrigued).

Gravity shows an initial settle (quick spin and say after 10-20 seconds) 1.020 ish, about as expected after 2 days. I left the hydrometer in the test jar for 5 mins and looked again, it had moved up to 1.042!! Higher than OG!

I have taken the hydrometer out and in a few times now, same thing happens.

Whats going on with that???!!! :hmm::hmm::hmm:

I believe the co2 forms bubbles on the surface of the hydrometer which increases it buoyancy and gives a false reading.
You need to take the first reading and give it a twirl to dislodge the bubbles

sounds like the issue, ehm, "Dad". I did spin initially, but I guess the bubbles collect once the hydrometer settles.
Have left it since to see (20 mins) now its at 1.022.
