Small Batch Brewer
AG #2 Based on Greg Hughes Raspberry Wheat
So after the success of my EKG SMaSH in December, it's AG #2 for me today and I want to attempt to get a better hold on water volumes. I've picked a simple recipe and it's another small batch BIAB with a 10min dunk sparge. I'm aiming for 8L in the FV at 1.050.
I've boosted the grains a little after reading that it is sometimes hard to efficiently mash wheat malt. Also my hops were a little higher in AA than in the GH recipe, so I reduced the amount slightly.
Intended mash water was 4.5L at 65C but added 100ml to adjust temp, so total mash water 4.6L.
First runnings came out at just over 3.5L, so loss to grain was around 1.1L. I did twist the bag up a little, but certainly didn't squeeze hard.
Dunk sparge in 76C water for 10Min. Total combined 1st & 2nd runnings = 10.5L
Pre boil SG = 1.026 @ 60C. Temp correction is 1 point for every 4C. So corrected 1.036. This doesn't look very promising...
Just under 9L in the kettle post boil. Around 1.6L evaporation/hr
Ended up with a smidge over 8L in the FV, losing around 800ml to hop debris, break, OG sample and a syphoning nightmare. Should be able to reduce this a bit.
OG 1.048, 2 points under target. Pitched 1tsp US-05 at 24C.
Grains
Lager Base Malt 1000g
Wheat Malt 800g
Mash 65C for 60min
Hop Schedule
7g Challenger 9% - 60Min
Pics
Marked up a new small FV so that I can measure volumes at each stage.
First time using my new ChefAlarm and currently waiting for the mash
Just over 3.5L of first runnings
10.5L combined 1st & 2nd Runnings
1.026 @ 60C Doesn't look very promising...
Aaaand were off!
Just under 9L post boil. Might be a little too much, depending how much is lost to hops and kettle gunk.
Cooling outside in a trug full of water as it's cold oop north today!

OG 1.048, 2 points under the target. Pretty chuffed with that.
