This I think should be a sticky somewhere on the forum, I can dig out the style guides (tomorrow) for your specific question but I'll do something here so give some guidelines for all styles :thumb:
 
Oh dear...can of worms.

Depends who you ask. If you ask an English brewer then they say they are what they want them to be. Usually a best bitter is a bit stronger than a normal one and stout and porter seem pretty interchangeable in modern English brewing.

The BJCP (the American Beer Judging body) has a number of different stout and porter styles.

I guess it's one of those things where you kind of know what it is - if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
