How much malt

I`m keen on trying to brew from scratch rather than a kit and wondered how much grain i would need for a 5 gallon brew, also which malt is best for an IPA?

most malts are good, maris otter is particularly good for ales. grab a recipe, have a look at what equipment you need, and make up your own mind :)

Failing that you can use an extract method where the mashing is already done for you. that way you can save on equipment and also boil less than 5 gallons to get a full size batch :cheers:
 
Thanks for the replies. Is it usually 4.5 to 5 kg of malt then per 5 gallon brew so you can mix the different grains for example 2.5 kg of one and 2.5 kg of another?
