most malts are good, maris otter is particularly good for ales. grab a recipe, have a look at what equipment you need, and make up your own mind :)
Failing that you can use an extract method where the mashing is already done for you. that way you can save on equipment and also boil less than 5 gallons to get a full size batch :

+1 for marris otter. 4 1/2 -5kg should do the trick.

It's normally 95% - 85% pale malt with the other bit as additions.
