My first Brew-Day post, but nowhere near my first brew ;)

Wilko Sweet Newkie Brown kit + 500g Enhancer, 1kg BrewSugar & 2.5kg ordinary sugar. Started between rugby matches about 1/2 hour ago.

OG = 1078 :mrgreen:

If all goes well it will be just over 9%. Yes, I'm one of those weirdoes who wanna get nicely mother-hammered on a handful of pints, rather than having to drink gallons then still reach for the scotch.

By the time it's brewed the bottletree will be full & waiting for it ;)

The 2nd FV contains steriliser for the bottles. (The other 2 are full of de-gunger in the bath, will be used for 7% Stout (Coopers, of course!) & 23% "Turbo" in the next few days.)

Here's some beer-porn of a pint of version 1 which came in at 7.6% & is totally lush :D

:drink:

Curious brew...!

Can you describe the flavours? I'm guessing quite "winey" with all that sucrose?

I've not (yet) been taught the vocabulary to describe beer flavours but I certainly wouldn't say it was 'winey'. I find it similar to proper 'dog', it doesn't taste as strong as it is, but that seems a very Brit thing to me. Something like 'Special Brew' tastes lethal but the 10%+ Dutch & Belgian beers I've spent much of the last decade drinking don't.

Every kit I've done since I've been home has pushed the OG a bit more, think my 1st stout was about 1052, what I'd like to achieve is something close to the 11.6% of my beloved Grolsche 'Kanon', eventually.

- Hey, I've always been a dude who likes to push the limits of the possible, so it's maybe natural for me to do the same with kit yeasts ;)

Was sufficiently bored/depressed by halftime (Scotland v Sth Africa) I decided to set the Coopers Irish Stout off too.

I usually just refer to it as "G+" ;)

For some strange reason - NOT lack of fermentables! - I didn't push this one as far as usual. Only added 500g enhancer & 1000g brewsugar to directions, thus OG of 1052.

Got a feeling that it might be ready before I have enough empty bottles for it though - only have 117 (500ml PET) bottles in total left, right now all but 27 are full.

Just done a quick grav-check.

After 5 days, the Dawg is still above 1030 but bubbling well.

After 4 days the Stout is down to 1012, bubbling about every 15 seconds & tastes pretty damned good already, but I'm gonna have the patience to let it do its' thang. I still have a dozen bottles of the last batch so no rush, plus I have a bit more drinking to do before I have enuff bottles for it. :drink:

Temps in my open-plan kitchen/diner/living room vary from maybe 17 overnight to a max of a shade under 21 & I have both FVs wrapped in beach-towels just in case.

The not-so-good news is that Wilko don't have the super-good prices anymore, I had to pay £12 each for Newkie & Pilsner kits on Tuesday :(

- got one of each so I'm CERTAIN of having a good "Solstice Season" :thumb:

Gonna put a few bottles of my as yet un-named Pilsner in the fridge for the weekend, it's had over a week of conditioning & the test-bottle I supped during the football (if you can call it that) on Tuesday was pretty good, if a little less fizzy than I like. Prob will up the batch-prime next time, instructions said 85g but as a result of what I've read here I used 100g this time & think nearer 150g will be closer to optimum for the future - just didn't want to jump that high in one go.

10 days for the Dawg, 9 for the stout.

Must have uck fupped the hydro reading on the stout last time 'coz they both show around 1014 today, and are still bubbling occasionally. Quite happy to give them a few more days as I still have a full fridge.

The lager is improving but is still a little sweeter & a bit less gassy than I'm aiming for. Does the job though ;)

Day 16 for the Dawg, 15 for the stout.

Both are a point or two under 1010 but as the stout is still 'plolloping' occasionally I'm gonna give them a few more days.

Despite the fact that they both taste extremely drinkable already ;)

The stout got bottled earlier this evening, the Dawg on Sunday.

Both were 1006 FG.

Been a bit to stressed to post in detail, my dear mum is in hospital 25 miles away so I've been spending a lot of time in the car.
