Just bought a stainless steel fermenter. Normally on my plastic fermenters, I use Star San or similar to sterilize and, if it needs it, an oxy type cleaner for cleaning. Can I use these safely, or do I need something different for the stainless stuff?

Na... but you are right to be cautious: My stainless steel fermenter was only a few days old when I left VWP in it for a few days... stained it black with an oily/rusty slick floating about. Careful with chlorine based cleaners, but I continue to use VWP but don't leave soaking for more than an hour (as instructions). I final rinse in Starsan; no issues. Sulphite is probably dodgy.

Basically I don't leave anything but water and beer in prolonged contact with my fermenter, and rinse out as soon as emptied.
