hi folks
just wonder if this would work.
I have a wilko ipa kit.
I was thinking if I boil some amarillo hops for 60 min.
then use the water to make up the kit.would I get the amarillo hop tast i like
 
You would need to add the kit or a kilo of DME to the boil as well!

I had exactly the same query last year. If you were to do something similar I'd advise (knowing a bit more now than I did then) bittering with 25g of something cheap like magnum, then add something tasty and aromatic at 5 mins and end of boil, say 25g each time of cascade for example. If you wanted to dry hop or add a hop tea after fermentation is finished add another 25g. Crossmyloof are your friend for small amounts of hops cheap :thumb:
 
Just read your post again, i modified the whole kit but you just want an Amarillo IPA, you could do a few things
Just add a hop tea to the fermenter
Boil some hops with the wort for five minutes, and add a hop tea to the fermenter.
Do the same and also dry hop or add some hop tea before bottling
Lots of other combinations too depends on how much depth you want to put into the flavour but definitely worth experimenting.
 
Boil a pan of water,heat off,10 mins later add hops,cool naturally,add to fermenter with worry and two or three kettles of water then add tap water after mixing to get to 20°c.
May have to add another kettle of boiled water but whose counting.

Wilko kits are a great blank canvas for hop additions and steeping the hops as Gerry recommends is the best way to get the Amarillo flavour into your beer. You could also dry hop 9 days in for another hop flavour addition and as to the amount you use is down to just how hoppy do you want it
 
Yeah, ditto to all who have suggested something akin to hop standing the Amarillo. It would be a crying shame to waste expensive hops like that by boiling for 60 mins.

I hop stand at 80 to 75 degrees normally and wait for the temperature to get there to keep isomerisation as low as possible.
