The only ingredient I'm missing for a stout recipe that I want to do is roasted barley. The most "local" which sells it is HBS is too far away to make it worth while and the postage from online orders makes it daft too.

I could wait until my next big online order but am wondering whether its viable to roast pearl barley as I already have that for cooking.

Roasting pearl barley is okay...its just de-husked barley.
The only difference between this and malting barley is the variety and the amount of nitrogen in it. Non malting barleys have higher nitrogen levels and can throw a haze and increase fullness of flavour in large amounts.
As your using it to colour and add some roastiness to a stout this isnt an issue.
So bash on:smile: and enjoy all the smoke that will fill the kitchen everytime you open the oven
