Well, had a great few nights in Newcastle. Some good beer. But,!! Gulp gulp. £6.30 for a pint of jaipur. Mrs had a double special gin. I paid the bill. Got to table and thought my God. I think most I've paid for jaipur in £3.80. But £6.30 your aving a laf

Today, the main TV soaps (Emmerdale, Corrie, Eastenders etc) all revolve around a pub ...

... but in reality, pubs went down the tube years ago when they started putting the cost of knocking back two pints a night beyond the reach of the average wage-earner.

Back in 1962 it cost (on average) 11.5p for a pint of beer and the average wage was £799. If you drank 2 pints a night you spent about 10% of your wages on beer. [2 x 7 x 0.115 x 52] / 799 x 100

I admit that £6.30 a pint is extreme but so was "A pound a gallon." for petrol so it's probably going to arrive.

At £6.30 a pint, two pints a night would cost just over £4,800 a year which means that a person nowadays would have to be earning about £48,000 a year to keep pace with me back in 1962.

Unfortunately, the current pay for a first year Probationary Policeman can be as low as £19,578 a year ...

... no wonder you never see one in a pub!

Daft as it sounds, even back in the 60's it was still cheaper to brew your own beer! :thumb:

PS

Shock horror!!! "A Pound a gallon? Never!" they said!

At the moment, ASDA up the road are selling petrol at 115p a litre which equals to £5.23p a gallon!:lol::lol:

Hi!
Heineken (those nice people who brought you quality lager!) have recently imposed a price hike on their products, which means my local WMC has had to increase the cost of John Smith's, Fosters etc by 10p per pint.
Why don't prices go up by 1p or 2p any more?

I reckon these two headlines from today's BBC News service just about sum up my previous comment. :thumb:

ONE
"UK unemployment falls by 7,000 to 1.6 million."
YAY! It must be paradise here!
:thumb:

TWO
"A third of UK on 'inadequate' income."
Er ... maybe not!

For me, the really sad thing is that my generation is the one that screwed it up ...

... and my only defence is that I personally voted against most of it. :nono:

A few yeasr ago Jaipur could be had for round a bout £3.00 but over the last 18 months the price has gone through teh roof. Keg Jaipur is abour £6.00 per pint and a lot of bars locally will not stock the cask version as it it is aconsidrably more than £4.00 per pint and they reckon people wont pay it.

Thornbridge have also done away with 500ml bottles of Jaipur and now you can only get 330ml for about £1.95. They are cashing in on th popularity but I now find there are as many good IPAs and APAs that are cheaper and as good as what used to be my favourite beer.

Im just reading a very interesting book at the mo which comes on to Heineken and their attempt at world dominance which was actually brought about by some canadian guy (Carlsberg) and the ensuing fight. At the end of the day its all about who can sell the most beer and make the most money...its called Capitalism and there aint nothing we can do about it,.. unfortunately

Is that the Pete brown book- A man walked into a pub?

Yes there is something you can do, make your own, support local microbrewers and don't buy Carlsberg or Heineken mass produced product.
What you don't drink can't hurt you!

Yes we can! :thumb: :thumb:

First off, spend your money somewhere other than at the outlet of a super-rich, international capitalist organisation. If McDonalds and Heineken had to rely on my money to survive they would both have gone broke many, many years ago! :thumb:

Secondly, join and support any of the numerous organisations that are against "the capitalist system".

Amazingly enough, there is an incredibly large spread of organisations that range from the political spectrum of Communism, Socialism, The Greens and Liberalism all the way through to the religious beliefs of Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists.

Before anyone starts saying something like "They're all bent." I will be the first to admit that NONE of the above is in any way perfect ... :nono: :nono:

... but they are ALL better than a system that takes from the poor to give to the rich!

Always remember ...

"For evil to prevail, all good men have to do is NOTHING!"

Don't forget, do NOT wear a coat or you will be exploited as a soft southerner!

You can still get a pint of locally brewed ale in the Crown Posada on the Quayside for £3.10, one of the best pubs in Newcastle. you can also get pints for double that in Bierrex if you want to pose with the "bright young things" and hipsters.

There are a few new micropubs open in Newcastle and Gateshead and plenty smaller local breweries to choose from, now that one of the big 6 , S&N is no longer here!

Thing is, the same company own 4 places in Newcastle. A local company. One of their other bars has far better beer, and only charges about £3.50 a pint. Love Newcastle and Leeds for a great choice of beer.

There is a great little Micropub opened in the railway arches behind the Central Station, Newcastle. They have a brewery in nearby Newburn and usually have 2 -3 of their own beers on.The Campfire porter with coffee, vanilla, toasted marshmallow at 7.0% is superb
They have 4 cask and 10 keg beers at any time and recently have had a lot of NEIPA beers. last week was a tap takeover by Verdant brewery, lots of full fruity American IPAs, some cost more than others due to rarity but usually 6- 7% beers. If you go try their own NEIPA, Bad Medicine (6.0%) on keg or reasonably priced can at £3.00 ish

Their own cask ales are approx £3.20 but 10% CAMRA discount applies and I believe they also give discount on the keg as well (or maybe that was just for me)! One not to miss.

Kind of makes me glad that since having kids I don't go out anymore. Usually quite shocked at the pint prices on the odd occasions I do venture into a pub now.

Being pretty tight out of necessity I had my birthday meal out at the local Chef & Brewer yesterday due to the fact that you can use your Tesco points at four times face value in there for food, but you can see where they make their money. Looking at the wine list and it's largely stuff that you can buy in the supermarket for £5 - £8 a bottle i.e. Wolf's Blass, Casillero del Diablo, etc. but they're quite happy to charge £16 - £20 for it just for the pleasure of drinking it on their premises. Suffice to say we did have a bottle as it would have been a shame to not have something to accompany the food but if I were in there for a drink I'd feel pretty ripped off.
