Hi all,

Brewed a couple of APA's (not the same style I'm going for here) but have been disappointed with the hop punch, or lack of. Great beers, but a little smoother than I'd like, lacking the in your face hop ooomph.

What does this recipe look like, have I gone overboard?
 
I read something recently which suggested that you need to get about 3/4 of your IBU from late additions for one of those mental hoppy yankee things...

Wish I could remember where. Might be in The Brewer's Apprentice, I'll take a look later.

Thanks Calum, I believe I've read similar actually.

I've changed the hop schedule and replaced the cluster with chinook, as from reading my notes I'm not sure I'm overly keen on that hop...

The 0min hops will be steeped at 70-80c for 20 minutes at flameout - hope this won't increase bitterness too much.

My aipa recipe I use your first hop schedule. But 40g at each addition. Aroma and flavour is amazing.

Chinook is only my favourite late addition hop! Yum!

Didn't get a chance to dig through the book last night, too knackered, will try again today...
 
Never used Chinook,.will be my first attempt!

With the expected relatively high gravity, should I consider pitching 2 packets of S05?

Also - the recipe suggest a finishing gravity of 1.015 - surely the S05 will push it further?

Have you considered Centennial for dry hopping? Also adds a massive USA style slap in the face like Chinook does -in fact, they go pretty well together...
 
Looks absurd to me, but then I could never understand the American take on traditional styles - they seem like parody to me, every characteristic taken to an incredible excess. That said, don't let me deter you, you're brewing for your own enjoyment, so design recipes to suit your palate!

30g dry hop of each in the recipe :cheers:

Completely understand where you're coming from fox. It's a completely different style really. But I'm working my way through them all... have yet to come across a beer I hate. Apart from Ginger beer :sick:

Do you use the same hops too dan? What about dry hopping?
I use 20g of cascade and 20g of Willamette at each addition. Tastes great and will be the hop amounts I use for any IPA iI do.
