Guinness: What's happened?

Tried a pint or 3 in the local last night.

Tasted very thin and bland compared to the last time I drank it. (Although that was 4 years ago. In Dublin. As meal replacement lol)

Not sure if its their keeping of it or the beer itself.
 
Here's a conundrum for any Dieticians we may have on the Forum. :thumb:

Back in the 1960's a mate of mine was diagnosed with stomach cancer and was issued a "GOD Prescription" by his specialist.

In this case, the "GOD" was short for "Guinness On Demand" as it was the only thing he could eat or drink that wouldn't upset his stomach; and yet still provided enough calories to keep him active.

Eric was by far the happiest cancer victim you could ever hope to meet. He survived until 2015 and died a couple of years after five of us (old schoolmates) had celebrated our 70th birthdays!

My question is ...

"Would the current version of Guinness provide the same amount of calories and vitamins?"​
I ask the question in the full knowledge that, with current levels of NHS funding, the only way anyone would get a "GOD Prescription" would be by talking to God himself ... :thumb:

... and by that time it would be a little bit too late! :whistle:
 
I must admit I've never had issues with the beer. It's my tipple of choice in a pub.

Sure I've had the odd bad pint but I put it down to cleanliness issues.

One thing annoys me is the pour and wait. Next time you order a pint ask your server to pour it straight to the next. You will get a better pint this way, I kid you not! All this nonsense about pour and wait is to make it feel more special.

I've also no issues with cans, what a great innovation.

My base/ house stout is

3kg Maris Otter
1kg Flaked Barley
500g black barley or roast barley
100g Acidulated Malt (this gives the beer a twang and really makes it special)

Any suitable hops (hops are not important, just get the ballpark figures correct)

S04 or 05 (I find 04 works best)

Not a true Guinness but should give you a good start to tweak.
 
I can hardly imagine a industrial scale brewer uses tap water. All larger brewery I know (mainland Europe) have their own source to pump up groundwater. I believe it's a cost thing.

Yes 23L batch, any general purpose hops will do. Target (I've never used them) would be great. I used 50g EKG for my last batch. Hops are not that important, you don't want them to stand out with a stout. Anything that gives an IBU around 30 works.

The reason it's my house stout is all the grain bill is in sizes that the shop sells so no measuring. The acidulated malt can be left out but it really does make a difference and gives it a twang. If you like a chocolately flavour then go for the roast barley. I personally prefer black barley as it's a blander taste.

Just tweak that recipe every time, use different yeasts and hops ect.

Put the next batch directly onto the yeast cake of the last one also saves a bit of cash.
 
You know I could shine a light through the guinness I bought but that was in England, I wonder if they have changed it in Ireland. If they have I'm sitting and waiting for the riots :)
 
I had a pint of Guinness in the Royal Dublin Hotel in 2002,it was black as night,the bartender stamped a shamrock on it and it was still there at the bottom of the glass?
That was my last pint of it,i cant stand it to be honest although it was probably the "real deal" i preferred Cafferys before they lowered the abv as everyone was going mental.
The night before we came home i was drinking "house" lager in a local,it was superb,brewed on the premises, it must have been good as i woke up and said "I CANT fly today"
I did and I got stopped at Glasgow and asked for ID,must have been the sweaty brow!
 
I read yesterday that Guinness is now the best selling beer excluding lager in the UK and has overtaken John Smith. Cant fiind the link now.
 
The sales of Guinness has declined quite dramatically - Presumably that's why they have had a go at a 'Golden Ale' - (very bland.) Compared to Titanic's Stout or the Old Cottage brewery's (Burton on Trent) and presumably loads more 'real stout' then Guinness is a poor drink. (My opinionated opinion of course !
