Keeping the mash temperature up

This may be a stupid question, but isn't it possible to keep the mash temperature at 70% or so by maintaining gentle heat in something like an Ace boiler. Although less energy efficient, it would save a lot of messing around covering the mash with insulating material.

Have I missed something glaringly obvious? :doh:
 
You can but the temp ends up uneven and could make it worse than just letting it drop because the bits being heated close to the heat source will go above the temp that kills the enzymes that make the mash work.
 
Sure, as long as the wort is recirculating, which is exactly what happens in the Grainfather, Braumeister, ACE Micro-brewery and Bulldog Brewer. Without recirculation you would get hot spots near the element.
