Doing another James Morton recipe tomorrow:

4.5kg Maris Otter
350g Crystal Malt
200g Amber Malt

Hallertauer Mittlelfrueh at 60, 15, Aroma steep.

Using Mangrove Jacks California Lager Yeast in place of the WL California Lager Yeast.

20l of wort hopefully.

Anyone any experience of the Mangrove Jacks ?

used it a week ago in a lager its a slow starter but when it gets going its good. iv not tasted it yet bit it smells nice i did pilsner malt magnum for bittering then Hallertauer at 10 mins

Interesting. I might have a crack at that as I have all of the ingredients or good subs. Whats the OG?

Alside says, it's a slow starter. I also found the krausen likes to hang around for a bit then suddenly drops. It's also a flocculant yeast so produces nice bright beer. I found it also quite malty (so good for german type lagers) but accentuates the hops too..

Hi mate - OG 1.052 - 1.056

The expected FG shows 1.016 - 1018 but not sure if that will change using Mangrove J. ?

So... a little delayed as Work and family prevented me from getting this on early weekend ...

Determined I thought I’d crack on tonight after work...

Sitting down now, with a beer I hasten to add !! It’s been a fairly Good few hours but .....

After cooling took an OG... sitting at 1060... way too high...

Added some pre boiled treated water which I’d cooled, 2 litres I thought ... anticipated as post boil volume looked low... then...

Knocked my OG and test jar over...

How can such a little fluid make such a mess on the kitchen wall and then boom the hydrometer is broken ... so couldn’t taken an actual OG...

Taste test is ok ...

But biggest lesson ...

Don’t brew after a long day at work when tired .

Time will tell!! Now ... beer and sleep [emoji99]

I've never found MJ Cali Lager a slow starter. Both times I've used it it's gone off like a rocket. I agree with everything else though, it's super flocculant and I had clear beer by the time carbonation had finished!
