so is it me or are these "modern" style air traps rubbish?

started a couple of DJ's off a couple of days ago, and have to refill the things twice a day as they just bubble over and run dry...

only good thing about them is they can be converted to a blow off valve quickly.

and they are supposed to be quieter

and easier to clean.

so thats 3 things really  but i'm with you I prefer the bubble traps.

I use these on my DJ's because they àre quieter, if using my FV I use a blow off tube as both old and new ones will empty if you have a vigorous fermentation.

One was on a dj of mead.... not exactly vigorous. ..refilled 9 times in 3 days, old style good for 48h so far

I now only put enough water in them to just cover the inside sleeve when fully inserted, I have never had one dry out completely on a DJ.

This is strange I have never had any problems with refilling never had to.
You can overfill maybe that's your problem with them emptying.

Have a look at this from 1:27 which i would call a vigorous fermentation.
