"S" Bubblers - Red cap?

What's the deal with the red cap for the plastic "S" bubblers? I've seen loads of pics of brews with these on. I got one with the one I bought yesterday but assumed this was to be left off as the whole point of a bubbler is it's a one-way valve and if you have a cap on, there's nowhere for the CO2 to escape...

Am i being a bit dim? :wha:
 
Sorry, but yes.

Even with the cap on there's a gap to allow passage of gas, just try blowing through it.

The cap is purely to stop flies and dust getting into the airlock.

Cap back on, gas is still venting, so Moley, you're right; I was being incredibly dim! :lol:
