Hi,

considering doing a Timothy Taylors style beer at the weekend, got plenty pale malt and styrian goldings hops but haven't got any black malt in the stock cupboard.

Can I use some chocolate malt instead of the black malt in the recipe ? If so, The recipe suggests 30g of black malt so how much chocolate malt do I use in its place ?

Cheers MyQul,
I'm thinking the same, its only a very small amount and assumed it was more for colour than any dramatic flavour addition. Will go with 30g of chocolate malt instead unless anyone else thinks different ?

Choc is around 900 ebc compared to about 1200 ebc for black malt so maybe use a bit more. Like 40g. Splitting hairs though.

The recipe I did for TT Landlord actually used 50 grams of chocolate and it came out very nice. Don't think it made much difference to flavour, just gave it a nice dark amberish colour.

I will see your 40g and raise you 50g

Thanks for the advice guys I will go with 40 - 50g then.
