Hi all, just to be sure:
I take my first reading in the ferm vessel after mixing all ingredients and yeast. Second reading taken when transferring to the pressure barrel. Is that right?
What about after adding the sugar for conditioning, or when the brew is ready to drink, does this not affect final abv?
Apologies if this seems like a silly question, but don't ask don't know!
Thanks, Kev

Measure the second time after 10-14 days to confirm fermentation has finished. Add sugar dissolved in a bit of water to your PB and rack your beer on top. The priming sugar will affect the ABV but it's marginal and not worth worrying about.

measure gravity when u want to ;) but get your SG(starting Gravity) reading at the same time as pitching the yeast. then after fermentation has finished (getting 3 consistant readings over 3 days is a strong indicator) you can take a Final gravity reading FG, and its the SG and FG that you use to calculate the final abv ;)

Priming sugar has little or no effect on the FG so dont worry about that..

if drawing your samples for gravity thru a tap, remember to claen and sanitise the tap spout after use.

by all means drink the sample to a taste test, PLEASE dont consider returning the sample to the batch.. if you think the 80ml or so needed to draw a sample is a waste, check out the copper kettle and other online brewshops for a floating ball gravity measure system that uses less beer.
