Well they are ;-). I use mine a lot.
You can't use them for checking bubbling pans (don't know why, maybe the steam) but you can use them for :-
Checking the temperature of an FV or barrel (which can vary over a degree from top to bottom).
Cups of water when you are waiting for it to cool down so you can put yeast in it. It's quick and you don't have to worry if your thermometer is sterile.
(you can also use it to balance your radiators which is why I bought it)
