I've seen an old thread saying that Infrared thermometers like this :-

aren't useful for brewers.

Well they are ;-). I use mine a lot.

You can't use them for checking bubbling pans (don't know why, maybe the steam) but you can use them for :-

Checking the temperature of an FV or barrel (which can vary over a degree from top to bottom).
Cups of water when you are waiting for it to cool down so you can put yeast in it. It's quick and you don't have to worry if your thermometer is sterile.

(you can also use it to balance your radiators which is why I bought it)

I use a version of this to find the best fermenting position in the house at any given time!

Like the thought of balancing the radiators too!!
